From the Jaws of Victory...
It's in the news, it's on the board... glum faces, and dire predicitions that what looks like an American victory will prove Pyrrhic.
"The Iraqis will revert to hating Americans once the euphoria of being rid of Saddam wears off."
"Iraq will balkanize into warring factions, drawing us into a civil war."
"The new Iraqi government will be a puppet of the US that commands no respect in the Arab world."
"If allowed to be independent, the new Iraqi government will have an implacable hatred of the US for our support of Israel and other interventions in the middle east."
"Our failure to send in humanitarian aid right now before the fighting has stopped is going to cause thousands of deaths."
You would think people would've learned something after their earlier predictions of military disaster, quagmires, insufficient troops, thousands of casulaties, and over a million refugees proved false. The thing is, they're not telling us what they think will happen, they're telling us what they want to happen. They didn't want the war to be a success, because it provides proof, once again, of American military prowess. They don't want the peace to succeed, because it serves to legitimize our action. They don't want the Iraqi people to be free, happy and grateful to the US, because it proves the virtue and superiority of American ideals. To paraphrase Ayn Rand, they don't want the Iraqi people to live, they want the US to fail.
