swapfile size

what's a good program to monitor how big my swapfile is using XP? i think XP is making a huge swapfile and it is the reason my comp takes like 15-20 secords to power down. 256 mb is enough memory isn't it? if not, it should be. :headbang:

i beleive they say the sawp file should be about 2x the physical ram. you can also set the min and max size to be the same so that it doesn't have to change sizes. that might help some. 512mb is best for windows xp but 256 works ok.

Thanks.

I found something. Adding the line: ConservativeSwapFileUsage=1 to my system.ini helped. The link I found it at is: http://www.reasonfreaks.com/bridge/phpBB203/viewtopic.php?t=75

Also this link is pretty informative: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q308417

XP eats 256 megs for breakfast. Then it wants 256 more for a mid-day snack just before its 512 meg lunch and 1 gig dinner (it's having a late thanksgiving dinner since it spent the last half of November trying to shut down after eating too much)

I usually set the swapfile to minimum memory*2.5, maximum memory*2.5

I don't like for it to expand and collapse as Windblows sees fit, takes too much time.

It doesn't seem like it accesses the hard drive very much. I've never had it crunch on my drive like some of my other computers in the past did. The only thing I noticed is that it is slow in shutting down.

I am running XP with 192mb of RAM and haven't any notable problems. I guess my windows is anorexic or something

I run it on my wifes Dell with 128. That is definitly the low end for it. It's a 1.6 P4, but it can be slow as hell at times.

I had fast shutdown enabled. After disabling it, it is a lot quicker than it was. Strange.

I really haven't noticed any performance problems with my XP 1700 even with 256 mb sdram.

i used a program called xp-antispy that you can get from http://www.xpantispy.de/

just click on the flag for English if the site is in some other language. it has an option for fast shutdown, by default i think it is disabled in xp.
