At the start it was an attempt to pile on 1000 posts to see if the database could handle the load without freaking out. It then became a shot for 10,000 ... but became lame and was abandoned. Its not treated as a run amok dumping ground that much anymore. The last 500+ posts became a somewhat rather serious conversation that starts up from tme to time.
