The problem with biometrics

Suppose biometrics security, like using a fingerprint instead of a password to confirm identity, becomes commonplace. Fingerprint scanners are in all computers, ATMs, points of purchase, etc. You have no passwords, just your finger. Then you're involved in some horrible accident and your finger (or more) is amputated or mangled, so you no longer have that finger to use.

Then what?

All of those systems I've seen come with a backup consisting of a username and password. Just input that, and add your new fingerprint from the existing hand.

I had my fingerprints scanned into the system yesterday. I was way cool. A little water on a glass screen like a scanner or copier and the rolly finger treatment and it was over. Very cool.
Last time (for the military) I was scrubbing off black ink for a day.
