"We've always had a cultural inferiority complex with regard to the Brits," Stanford University linguist Geoffrey Nunberg says, "that they speak correctly and we don't.
Define correctly. I speak the perfect dialect for my region, ancestry, and environs. That's correct enough for me.
Elizabethan English is spoken perfectly by the Melungeons of Hancock County TN and surrounding area. I mean Shakespearean English almost. A lot of people have a hard time understanding it now that the typical dialect has become Americanized. Still, according to those who study and seem to care about stuff like this, it is the most proper English spoken anywhere in the world. Go figure.
So speak for yerself Geoffrey. Myself, I know what those around me are saying, the point gets across, and that is the sole purpose of language is it not?
