Student activists at the State University of New York in New Paltz want the school to end its policy of only allowing same-sex roommates in the dormitories there because it is heterosexist and it allows hateful people to continue to hate, according to the Times Herald-Record.
The activists suggested that unisex living would help eliminate dangerous situations such as a homosexual student having to live with a person intolerant of his or her particular lifestyle.
The current policy perpetuates bias, student Senator Liam Hoffman told the school paper there. "You allow that hateful person to continue to be hateful, just not in the same room as that person … I think it's dangerous for people to not confront their own biases.”
The student senate at SUNY, however, shot down the proposal.
