Most nouns were based on the sound they make when their action is performed. In the case of thumb, it's probably based on the sound your thumb makes when you try to snap with wet fingers. Other examples include dig, sob, groan, fart, and go crazy.
Personally I think life is an odd word. It's a rather simple syllable to assign to something that's so goddamn complex and frustrating. I hereby petition that it is renamed aSDGKHASTOIYUW#*)%@#IGNAISGASUOSADJFSATGOSANTMOTHERFUCKINGPIECEOFSHIT
