There's a lot that isn't needed or particularly wanted. But as long as people keep making this shit into blockbusters by going to see it, it'll keep getting made.
 
it would have gotten made sooner or later. this year is a logical start for these types of films as the 5th anniversary is coming up. media types love multiples of 5.
