A nasty little surprise

I was packing some stuff upstairs for Leah yesterday when i accidentally bumped the nitelight in the upstairs hallway with my leg and knocked it out of its socket. I plugged it back in and all seemed fine. Later that night after coming out of the bathroom and turning off all the lights i noticed that the nitelight which has maybe a 5watt bulb seemed unusually bright. In fact it was glowing like you'd expect a 60watt bulb and then i noticed it was getting brighter. I was kind of wierded out being overly tired so i reached down to grab it and turn it off when it literally exploded in my face! I couldn't believe it the thing blew apart in 100 pieces. I was fortunate the bulb was made of plastic and not glass or i'd have a face full of shrapnel.
I'm still trying to picture the physics of how the damn thing could actually explode.

You probably deformed the coil inside the bulb when you gave it that little whiplash kick. It likely doubled back on itself, causing a greater restriction in the loop.. and in bulb terms.. restriction means heat and glow. Normal bulbs would have just died the second you hit it, but being a punker 5watt allowed it to survive and Hulk out on you.

But where does the energy come from to send all that plastic flying? I wouldn't even think the coil could produce that much of a reaction. I almost wonder if the plastic itself might have been the culpret. Maybe expanding from the heat until the base could no longer hold it back.

That little plastic bulb still had to be airtight to work properly. It wasn't designed for that kind of heat related gas expansion. The entire shell had to be super hot and under the laws of expansion ... on the breaking point. The thing was a little grenade. Touching it popped the bulb; rushing gas and fragments push the shell over the edge.

Not that Unc's theory isn't impressive, but what probably happened was that bulb got jarred and the seal broke. Letting in a tiny bit of air. That would cause the filament to burn and the O2 would cause the bulb to shatter.

I use solid-state, or LED nightlights only. Zero heat.

Ah yes.. I would have expected it to fail quickly in any manner of oxygen atmosphere ... but my experience is only in 32w in glass and higher ... not the little trickle juice bulbs in plastic. In glass terms, the slighest failure of the exterior would cause it to pop like a balloon. I guess you really have to lean on the plastic ones pretty hard to make them die outright.

Face it, Hex... you hit that sucker juuuuust right.

I am a little shocked that the industry would allow the use of a filament that could survive several times the heat load than was needed for it to operate. Thats just makes for a fire risk.
