American Space Exploration Program

President Bush wants a lunar base for launching missions into deep space. That's a wonderful idea. But, shouldn't we direct those billions of dollars towards solving urgent problems on Earth first?

From Yahoo News:

Reuters: Bush Outlines Plan for 2015 Moon Landing

(AP) - President Bush, envisioning "new journeys to the worlds beyond our own," unveiled a plan Wednesday to send astronauts to the moon, Mars and beyond on missions sure to cost hundreds of billions of dollars and stretch the bounds of technology. He called for a manned lunar landing as early as 2015. Bush's election-year initiative represents the boldest space goals since John F. Kennedy laid the groundwork for the Apollo program that landed Americans on the moon in 1969.

There is plenty of money to go around & space may have the answer. It's been a fantastic investment so far.

its only $12 billion dollars. And $11 billion of that is re-alocated from NASAs previous budget. Whats the big deal? I think its been too long coming personally.

Didn't bush snr propose exactly the same thing?

yeah but he said all that before a price tag was given and any money allocated. When they realized how much it would be they did a double take and decided to pretend space suddenly wasnt important anymore. Lasted a good decade. Plus Bush Sr. had to deal with a democratic congress who wasnt about to give him any neato toys.

As long as there is plenty of room in the budget for it, I think it's great. The benefits produced by the advancement of technology and science that result from space exploration are surely worth the investment.

Of course Bush Sr. proposed this. Aren't all Bush Sr.'s proposed-but-didn't-make-it-for-one-reason-or-another popping up all throughout Jr's term? :hmm:

I dunno. I've always been fascinated with space and whatnot. I think it's great to explore, though if we end up being nuked by some alien that's out there - tough shit I guess. Look for trouble, be prepared for trouble.

I think the President's focus right now could be a bit more ... focus'd, though. Such as straightening out US health care, ... etc.

I'm referring more towards costs. Social security, too. But mostly costs of health care. :s And other things. Things that could certainly be more important than playing star wars.

Look around you. Virtually everything in your view was created for or improved by space travel.

Costs...let people take care of themselves, that's their job.

Social Security is a good example of a program in need of a bigger budget. I don't know what the government could do to reduce healthcare costs, though. Other than stronger regulation of the private healthcare industry, particularly pharmaceutical empires. And tort reform to ease the financial burden on insurers and healthcare providers brought about by overzealous litigation.

I can't help it. I just don't think that any price is too high to pay for space exploration. Maybe it's the starry eyed kid in me, or the sci fi fanatic, or even the science geek, but I truly want us to be *out there*, exploring, learning, DOING. Just because we can, and just because it is inherently human to want to explore.

Do you people have any idea how much willpower it's taking to not get into it about SSA or healthcare? Huh? DO ya?

Somebody had better post some good "I wanna go to space & kick alien ass" stuff soon or I'll..I'll...I'll...start smoking,,,,yea, that's it. Help a brother out...post something or the lungs get it :evilsmok:
