He didn't set sail to enslave the natives. He set sail to find a shorter route to the spice islands. The enslaving part was part of the "White Man's Burden" that Catholic Europeans seemed to feel during that time of history.

Americans might like to think that Columbus's big contribution to the world was discovering America. But that's not what the rest of the world thinks. It was showing that the world wasn't flat. At least to the common man. The church and educated men knew that centuries before, but kept it quiet so as not to contradict the Bible.
