Anyone ever done any metal detecting?

As some of you may know, I've always had a passion for coin collecting and collecting old things in general. I've thought about metal detectors before but never got around to getting one. I've recently visited some metal detecting forums and some of the stuff these guys dig up is fascinating.... I think I'm gonna get one. I've already got a list of places I'm gonna hunt at. There are three old plantation sites within two miles of my house.

They have some pretty state-of-the-art ones out now. I'm leaning towards the Whites DFX model.

am I a geek or what

I never bothered because all of the good places to do it in this city have made it illegal to do so. This place is one huge Civil War battlefield.

I can see their point in making it illegal as people with shovels and detectors in the 60s and 70s were slaughtering the landscape going after ammunition, buttons, buckles, and old mess kits from the era to sell in local curio shops. It was ruining everything to the point where grass could no longer get a foothold.

The forums I've been reading thru lately are adament about getting permission from the rightful property owner first and when you locate something, dig a small plug, pull it out and replace the plug. Most of the new models out now have near pinpoint accuracy and since coins and jewelry have a 'signiture' it will even tell you what is likely down there. :nerd:
