Yasser Arafat has died at the age of 75 after failing to be revived from the coma he slipped into on Wednesday at the French military hospital where he was being treated for an undiagnosed blood and digestive disorder.
Yasser Arafat, the 75 year-old Palestinian leader, has died in the intensive care department of the French military hospital where he was being treated for an unknown illness.
The frail head of the Palestinian Authority arrived in Paris last week after losing consciousness briefly at his West Bank headquarters. Arafat was at first said to have been suffering from a severe case of influenza, but was later diagnosed as having blood abnormalities and trouble with digestion.
Palestinian officials then ran tests for leukemia but the cancer was ruled out, and doctors remained uncertain what was causing his illness. Arafat's condition worsened three days ago and he slipped into a coma on Wednesday.
Born in Cairo in 1929, Yasser Arafat preferred to claim Jerusalem as his birthplace. He became politically active as a 19-year-old engineering student in Egypt in 1948, when the Arab countries that declared war on the fledgling state of Israel were defeated and thousands of Palestinians forced to flee their homes as a result.
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's health has deteriorated sharply at the Paris hospital where he is being treated for an unexplained illness.
He is in intensive care, but aides have issued conflicting reports about whether he has fallen into a coma.
Israeli TV has reported Mr Arafat is brain dead, although this was denied by the hospital and Palestinian officials.

Earlier on Thursday, a French medical source told AFP that doctors treating Arafat had carried out an electroencephalogram.
The source described it as "a sign of extreme gravity".
On Thursday afternoon top aide Nabil Abu Rudeina said the 75-year-old leader was in a "critical and serious condition" in a military hospital outside Paris.
There have been conflicting reports throughout the day over whether he is in or out of a coma.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military has been placed on high alert and Palestinian security forces are reviewing their plans to keep Palestinian territories calm in the event of Arafat's death.

I'm afraid that if Israel did try somethin, Bush would stick his nose into that and in doing so bring up a whole new load of shit.
I'm with Raven, to me this is OH FUCK.
I hope I'm wrong.

They'll be blood drawn though...it's not going to be a nice transfer of power with a phone call, a speech of concession and a winning speech. None of the 4 contenders for power are loved by the whole populace.
