Are we being watched?

What do you guys think? I think most of us here are somewhat "Geeky", meaning we love technology, but how do you feel about the fact that technology is making it easier for governments to profile their citizens?

My brain came up with the question:

How many things are done now, that although they break the law, are actually done for the greater good. Or have some kind of benefit.

Because on one hand you can say that as long as everyone abides by the law, then there is nothing wrong with being watched. But maybe sometimes, there's a case where a little wrong-doing results in more good than bad - and that's something which would be stopped by the Big Brother factor.

Also, if having the technology to profile anyone leads to laws that get stricter and stricter just because anyone is within grasp, then I think it could be a bad thing.

But maybe that's just the George Orwell influence. :D

All i know is that the reasons i have delusions of grandeur is for my security. After all, everyone is out to get me.

Well, I think there are times where people technically break the law, but for the good of other people. I could come up with examples if necessary, ask if you want em.

Anyway, I agree we need to find terrorists, and hard criminals, and technology could go a long way towards finding these people, but how many normal, law abiding citizens are going to have their privacy violated in order to find the identity of the bad? Or, is that just something we are going to have to live with in order to fight terrorism effectivly?

I'm just really undecided on this one, on one hand, I love technology, and if they can do it, I think they should do it. On the other hand, I don't want every purchase I make tracked to a central computer to determine my diet, clothing preferences, medicine needs, and so forth.

Woooo Hoooo, if I'm in a third world country, does that mean I can get the US to give me Aid now?

Then so is the US, and so is The Netherlands...where did you get that definition?

/shrug, that is what I learned in school. 99% or higher of Americans can read and write. And 99% of Dutch citizens too.

Since when is Mexico third world?

wow, i should take that as a compliment, however, we are third world, don't know where the difference between 1st and 3rd world is made, i know we have a GDP bigger than Canada's, and Canada is 1st world.

Must be because we do not improve in technology, and because we don't have interests in being a nation with a military army for war.

Hm OK sorry, not 99%, but probably 95% at least. That is where the original definition comes from (originally at least, it might have changed). Mexico has a literacy of 89%.

Luis, Mexico has a population of 102 million. Canada has less than one third of that at 32 million. Mexico has a GDP of $915 billion. Canada is at $775 billion. While you may have a bigger GDP, we have less than one third the number of people.

89% fuck, that's pretty good.

bugger the number of people, they got more money than you ner ner ner :D :D
