This is so funny:

LONDON (AP) - Europe needs to stop complaining about the United States and instead pool its military resources to become a superpower on par with America, Prime Minister Tony Blair ( news - web sites) said.

Well I can't disagree with him there.

Blair said some European criticism of America "comes from an irritation with their huge superpower status. If we pool our sovereignty in a way that gives us a strong voice and, if we improve our defense capability, we will be the strategic partner that America needs and wants."

This I don't get. I understand they are irritated with the huge superpower status, but how will we (Americans) benefit if they improve their defense capability, and how will they be a strategic partner? :confuse2:

European allies spend about 1.8 percent of their gross domestic product on defense, compared with the United States' 3 percent.

Plans to create an EU defense force with up to 60,000 soldiers in a rapid-reaction peacekeeping unit have stalled because Greece objects to a deal that would allow Turkey to veto deployment in its region. Turkey is a member of NATO ( news - web sites) but not the EU.

I sense this recent threat of vetoing more peace keeping operations has caused some troublesome nights for some people. Will 60,000 soldiers be enough?

Very interesting what those guys on the other side of the Atlantic are doing. Very interesting.

BTW I got this link from fark.com, here are some comments on it:

NOTE: I don't necessarily agree with all of them.

They'd be incredible with German engineering, English governance, and French culture.

Of course, they migh tend up with French engineering, German governance and English culture. Yeee.

:D

Aint gonna happen.

As much as the w. euros like complaining about American aggression, they wont put their money where their mouth is and actually cough up for defense, theyd rather the US do it so they dont have to pay for it so they can continue financing their civil programs (like their yummy 6 week vacations, lavish unemployement benefits and subsidies), and keep saying that the US are a bunch of belligerant wankers who put their military noses where they dont belong.

Ironically, those who seem to complain the most about american global cop-ism are the same who dont want their own military spending to grow.

hmm....

Finally, someone else to solve all the worlds problems. Of course, they still won't do anything, but it's a good start.

I can't wait watching them bankrupt their economy by spending as much as we do on our military budget (that's not a slam on the EU, it's a slam on the US).

I say the EU should just forget about it and become the 51st state. Or if they must keep their culture each country become another US state. Talk about Super Power
:D

I'd go along with that one, as long as we didn't have to learn French.

i don't understand that, english [sorry, british] engineering develops quite a lot of stuff, we're an acknowlegded nation of innovators and inventors. as for culture, sorry for giving the world poets, actors, film-makers, painters, sculptors, architects, musicians, engineers, world sports, language.... :p

i'd rather have the german governance, they've got the reputation for being more efficiant and organised than anyone else.

the reference to strategic ally is just what the fark refers to, a large ally that can take the strain of foreign involvement that the us seems to be tired of doing. the missile defence system, for example, has already been offered to the uk, recognising the strategic importance of the island to the north atlantic routes.

What? The world isn't already an American state? :confuse2:

:D

I think theres a law on books now where the US won't claim another state without it having some kick ass beaches and a national drink ... at least there should be a law like that.

seeingas the eu has a larger population i think the us should join us instead, to form the union of super states and republics. it's got a great acronym :D

You may have a larger population, but we have more guns, we win.

USW

United States of the World.

united states, sovereignties and republics? [not letting that acronym drop]

anyways, we can always buy some guns off you guys. hell, britain makes a packet making the things! alternatively, you could try making more babies, there's a hardship ;)

I'm getting right on that one, but I've already got six, I think I did my part.

very good, but it doesn't mean you can't practice, in case your country needs you again :D :D

Thanks ris, I'm going to be tormented all your base are belong to us for life now :p

I just can't all your base are belong to us seem to get it out of my head now!!
