Blood for oil

What a weak argument for being anti-war. (This is mainly directed at Americans)-Imagine, we chose to avoid conflict. saddam or a similar dictator decides to overtake the Saudi oilfields. Then they take the other middle eatern oil. Hold it hostage. Maybe, if they are true anti-capitolists & have Allah in their minds they blow all of them up. NO more mid-east oil. Now, there is no reason to get involved in the region whatsoever (Israel, you're on your own).

Let's jump onto the bicycle & go grocery shopping. We'd take the VW bug, but it's outta gas & damned if we can afford $12./gallon gasoline.

Let's start in the bakery-$4.39 for a loaf of bread???? Shit, it's gone up, again. Canned peas, sale, 3 for $6.67, with coupon. Meats-can you believe beef is $13.11/lb? OK kids, we're eating straw tonight.

Winter is coming-honey, our last bill was $365. Can we afford to set the thermostat above 54° tonight? Well, dear, it will be 18° below zero, we might have to.

Summer in the city-news report-"all the cities cooling shelters have been closed for the rest of the month due to lack of natural gas. If you need immediate emergency response, please call 911. You may go to one of the city parks & sit in the sprinklers, they are allowing family rates due to the high heat today. $5. per family & remember, immediate family only.

Business trips-Due to the inability for our company to afford flying, even in the economy class, we will be laying off 30% of our staff & asking the rest of you to walk, We've run out of space for bicycles.

In other news, with only Schneider & JB Hunt as commodity haulers, the DOT has suspended operations until this energy emergency is over. Good luck.

Just think, 60+% unemployment, all because we didn't want to spill blood for oil.

Huh?.....Imagine we start shedding blood for every scenerio we can "IMAGINE". Wouldn't the cost of our defense and the resources it consumed cause similar problems? Maybe we better kill our neighbors just in case they fall into that percentage that goes berserk and starts shooting up the neighborhood. Hmmmm....theres a thought...

One more quick point. Even if bush did want to go in for reasons oil related, it still wouldn't change the fact that we would probably need to go in for security reasons anyway! His or anyones reasoning, doesn't change the facts.

I'm missing something here Hex. We have enough military presence in the area to put down any attempts of aggression that Iraq could make before they got off the ground. What "security reasons" are you referring to?

Perhaps the fact that Iraq can develop weapons without the rest of the world knowing?
What is the main reason the US wants to invade Iraq? Why would they if there wasn't a serious threat? If things were safe because of US military presence, the Bush administration wouldn't do all the efforts to get support from in and outside the country for an attack on Iraq.

Nuclear weapons. ie- The security & safety of of America, Israel and other nations that will suffer if Iraq acquires or builds such a device. That is to say nothing of Biological weapons.

BZZZ. Wrong answer. The forces in that area of the world are not capable of defending any sustained attack on the part of the Iraqi forces. At most, they could hold for a few days in the hopes of more forces being flown/shipped in, but with all that's going on, those hopes would be slim indeed. Remember...in order to get to Iraq from Afghanistan, you have to go through Iran. ;)

a better question would be why dont we just spend all this time, energy and money developing alternate fuel sources? then they could keep all the stinking oil.
if sunbeams were weapons of war, we'd have solar power.

Three words...Hydrogen Fuel Cells. That's what the automakers are developing for the future. I mentioned this some time ago on another board. BTW...did you know that 41% of the oil used in the US comes from the US?

the hydrogen fuel cells are a great idea but it is the sutomakers developing it. i think the OIL companies need to start looking for alternate fuel sources. that will be where the problems start if they suddenly lose 59% of their product.

The oil companies are already looking at ways to develope the fuel cells. I'd rather see just pure liquid hydrogen being used, but the stuff is even more dangerous than gasoline.

this really is off topic central isn't it. :D

My point was, people use the "Bush is just gonna get rich off this war. That's all he wants. Well, I'm not willing to trade blood for oil." blah, blah, blah.

Well, that's a distict but irrelenvent possibility. He can't get rich, in office, and for all the right political/social/moral reasons for this war, it really does come down to oil. If we (the west) lose that source, it will, alneit temporarily, cripple our collective economies. There are other sources, hell we've got trillions of gallons under the Gulf of Mexico but the eco-terrorists won't allow us to explore, much less drill. That & the fact that oil workers are union members makes it a hell of a lot more expensine than $12. crude from the middle east. Without a currently available, viable, alternative source of fuel, we (Mexico, USA, Canada, Western Europe) are in for a serious hurting. Stop the holier than thou attitude, especially all the soccer moms in their Yukons & let's take this fucker out.

they are? i stand corrected.

gonz, i agree with you.

out of curiosity, anyone know where the chinese get most of their oil? is this a potential problem?

That's another can of worms there spot. But something the intelligence community has been spending a lot of time on.

Ok...Now I'm really confused. "the fact that Iraq can develope weapons without anyone knowing" ? Don't WE do that here. Guess the world should destroy us too. And I'm still hearing alot of "if"s. If Bush didn't try to convince the world that this was in their best interest, we would REALLY have hell to pay for taking action....Seems like everyone is poking around looking for a good reason to to get behind a shaky issue. BTW...we ca get to Iraq through Turkey. And if it were REALLY needed, we wouldn't worry what Iran said or did. I'm still confused on the whole issue.

You see, we hold elections...we elect our leaders. Our leaders aren't maniacs that gas their own people.

The fact that people don't see that boggles my mind.

Well, that redefines "naive"...I'm not arguing for or against anything here. I'm looking for some clarity that I can apply to my own thinking on this issue. Sorry, Coffee Bean, but if something doesn't flush, I don't walk away and pretend it isn't there anymore. I have this simple belief that hypocrisy is the ONLY sin. I try to avoid it, and I never could accept it.

No we don't. We decided many years ago to work towards disarmament so we've been cutting the amount of nuclear devices we have.
