A large contingent of Iraq's elite Republican Guard headed south in a 1,000-vehicle convoy Wednesday toward U.S. Marines in central Iraq - an area that already has seen the heaviest fighting of the war. In Baghdad, Iraqi officials said two cruise missiles hit a residential area, killing 14 people.

As I keep saying, Bush has grossly underestimated the level of resistance we are going to encounter, and grossly overstated our advantage. There was a reason we didn't even try to take baghdad last time! Bombing cities is one thing, conquering (or liberating if you prefer) is another matter!

There was a reason we didn't even try to take baghdad last time!

Yeah, it wasn't part of the deal we made with the U.N. You're underestimating our forces.
Nobody said it would be easy and nobody would die. Bush said the opposite, as a matter of fact.

Our advantage is grossly understated. If we were wanting to conquer, Baghdad would have already been ashes, that does not mean nukes. It's the humanitarian side of war that we get bogged down. Standing orders are to kill threats, which means evaluation which means time which means more coalition losses.

Well, now you bring up the 'finer points' of all this. In another place, in another time, our advantage would be enormous, and there would be no question of victory, and a swift one at that. The problem is nobody wants us doing this, so we have to walk on egg shells while trying to fight a war. Not exactly ideal conditions. If a 'kill em all' approach were used, sure, we have the undeniable advantage, and we'd be done in a matter of hours (wait, make that 20 minutes for the missles to reach their targets), but that isn't the war we're fighting. Modern wars are so complicated. Public opinion, humanitarian considerations, etc etc... You are fighting a war with your hands tied in the modern era, thats the problem! Thats why we are undestimating our advantage. Throw out public opinion, and bring out the real weapons, and sure, no problem. We can't fight that war though (even if MitchSchaft would like to) ;)

We're fighting that war right now. We're softening up Baghdad, then we're sendin in the ground troops. Our ground troops are fighting that war on the way to Baghdad as we speak. Not the stuff you see on TeeVee either.

Nah, we haven't nuked anybody yet. Did I miss something? Maybe i should check MSNBC, I could be wrong ;)

MitchSchaft, apparently you missed my point, but that's ok. Not a problem, I miss yours a lot times too ;)

For all of ours sake, I hope you gungho kill em all and sort the rest types are right. We'd all be better off if it is quick and easy. I just don't expect that to be the case. I just expect that year or so from now we'll still be discussing when the violence is gonna stop in Baghdad. I really do hope to be wrong on this, that would be for the best!
