Brits -WTF is speck?

This is a new one on me.
I am reading a salad recipe from a british chef that calls for "8 slices of speck". I am at a loss.

Its not healthy, cheap and a bit... nasty!

Cos its chopped pork... its a cold meat. Cold meat salad!

Its just not my idea of a choice cold meat!

If the recipe was meaning speck as in Italian cured meat... then I'd add it in!
