More than nine out of 10 white Britons have no or hardly any ethnic minority friends, according to a poll that reveals the continuing gulf between races and religions more than 40 years after the UK became a multicultural society.

So, the question is...can we have an open & honest discussion of race or will it become "Abortion 2: Return of the Pariahs"

Yes! We can!

I don't doubt The Guardian's claim (its a respected broad sheet) but I don't think its due to a conscious racist standpoint... its more to do with where abouts in the UK you live... Many areas are predominantly white or predominantly asian or predominantly black.

Self-motivated racial segregation. You see that a lot in my area too. It's not that people get forced into ghettos so much as people chose to move into areas where they feel that they can get along best...with "people like me". You get parts of Montreal with names like "Little Italy", "Little-Siscilli (sp?)", The Latin Quarter, the Village...The Mohawk reserves and as a Jewish frined of mine called it once... Jewtopia :)

After that...it's exposure. If you don't see people of different racial or ethnic origins on a regualar basis...how the hell are you supposed to befriend one?

*excepting online, of course*

Well, we're off to a good start. Time for some finger pointing.

White flight is ridiculous. ANytime you move so far away from your job it takes two incomes to pay the mortgage & the gas bill, it's become moronic.

It is self fulfilling racial segregation though. I doubt that Dr King meant for his people to stay in the same neighborhoods where they were forced to live half a century ago. Are we all so scared of the boogie man that we're afraid to talk to one another? Afraid to live amongst a bunch of *gasp* them?? How sad. I've always looked for heavily segregated neighborshoods. Mostly because white folks are so damned dull.

White folks can get pretty lively when a minority moves into their hood, though. ;) The first ones will be friendly enough, but there's always one, or two, that make your life hell until they actually get to know you, and decide that you're okay, or get to know you, and decide they'd rather move out, sell their house below value just to get out, and then claim the minority drove down their property value. The opposite of gentrification.

Its not fear of race... I think its probably due to fear of those with a different take on law and order!

Predominantly black and asian neighbourhoods sadly tend to be "bad areas"... low income, poor housing, high crime rate... you tend to find that the white families that live there are the kind of people you wouldn't want to be at a house party with... if you wanna live!

But its not that the black and asian families that have made it that way... its always been so... the cheap housing was all that the first law abiding immigrant families could afford and all that we were willing to give them back in the 50's and 60's... they put down roots in that area and so it becomes a predominantly asian or black area.

True. Isn't it a reasonable reaction, given the crime stats & the polarizing self-proclaimed black leaders? Most folks have little clue as to the general makeup of another group except what they see on TV, or driving thru "their" neighborhood. example; I was never scared to go into or thru Compton (Cal) but you can bet your ass I'd not have lived there. I'd also not want the people I experienced there as neighbors. Thugs & gangbangers don't manicure their lawns. :D From what I've experienced too many minority type people believe the white devil has cash stashed and more cars than is good for them & are just waiting to dump that headache of a house onto some unsuspecting buyer. They forget to put down the remote & look at the real situation.

Good. Back when I was a kid, children finished high school or college, got a job, moved into whatever they could afford & slowly climbed the social ladder. Your first house was a fixer upper. As soon as reasonable, you sold it moved out & on. Do this 3, 4, 6 times & your ready for retirement. The difference is, the neighborhoods always changed. If the middle class minority families would leave their predominately "like me" 'hoods & expand there might be more mixing. More mixing might lead to less animosity. Less animosity might lead to understanding. Understanding would lead to the actual melting pot affect strived for here. Britain, in the 21st century, needs to follow suit apparently.

Follow Suit? Follow who? The way I see it around here you still have a seperation between the black neighborhoods and the white neighborhoods. It's not a mix of both.

Slowly as it may be, neighborhoods seem to be less segregated than they once were. Less so in the soccer mom The Pines at Whispering Deer Creek Estate Crossing hoods but from the bottom up.

Well, I work in a fairly good size city, Jefferson City, and live in a pretty small town. I'd say for both of them there is still as much segregation as there ever was. There are definite black areas of JC, there are definite white areas with an occasional black or white thrown in to the others 'area'. Now, in my small town there are exactly 2 black families, and quite simply, I haven't the foggiest idea why they would want to live there.

I live there because it's a nice, quiet, small town. The reason I don't see why they would is the looks they get. Nobody is overtly racist to them, at least that I'm aware of, but the looks they get at the grocery store, school, wherever have to to by trying for them. Plus I just think they would feel uncomfortable living amongst so many whites. To be perfectly honest, I would certainly feel uncomfortable being one of 8 or so white people in a town of 4,000 blacks.

Follow suit as in work on getting better.

I think that its more a matter of how long it takes for each phase of your plan. Going from starter home to final home, or even to the second step, can take a long time depending on your financial situation.

I went from apartment directly to my starter home...I'm still in it after nearly 10 years. I may be able to go to my middle-home in a few years, providing I get a decent career.

I lucked out in that my neighbourhood is multicultural. Still majority white français de souche (pure bred)...but some black, hispanic, muslim and indian people...including myself and MrsBish. :D

If it takes me 10-13 years to move up a notch... and I'm upper-lower class, then it might take lower class families longer to move up that rung and spread out. The longer people stay in pne place, the longer it feels more like home and moving far away from home is difficult...even for immigrants.

So the neighbourhood grows with new people coming in and fewer people leaving.

Making it easier and thus quicker to move up that rung would mean a faster spread of minorities. The American Dream. Move up as fast as possible :D

The mixing works both ways... black and asian families have just as much chance and opportunity to move into a white majority area just as white families have the chance to move into a black or asian majority area.

In Britain neighbourhoods stay pretty much the same... the housing is either expensive or not, the people high earners or not... although some areas are starting to change in terms of popularity and fashionablility but the racial mix tends to stay constant.

I don't actually think this is an all bad thing... it means that families are less likely to be treated with ignorance and racism... as they undoubtedly would be by some individuals.

Sure the melting pot idea is great in theory but in practice... it may lead to less tolerance rather than more!

If that's not overtly racist, I don't know what is. You're community is making people feel uncomfortable simply because they are a different race. I bet if one of their children walked up to you and said' "BOO", you'd jump 10 feet (3.4 meters) ;)...
