SASKATOON — The incoming president of the Canadian Medical Association says this country's health-care system is sick and doctors need to develop a plan to cure it.

Dr. Anne Doig says patients are getting less than optimal care and she adds that physicians from across the country - who will gather in Saskatoon on Sunday for their annual meeting - recognize that changes must be made.

"We all agree that the system is imploding, we all agree that things are more precarious than perhaps Canadians realize," Doing said in an interview with The Canadian Press.

"We know that there must be change," she said. "We're all running flat out, we're all just trying to stay ahead of the immediate day-to-day demands."

Great role model.

It just can't work.

what can't work? you're not really saying anything here.

oh, yeah, you mean nyah nyah government in health care bad doodie doodie? something at about that level?

I think it's been established that drawing a main plan designed on any foreign plan is out.

we'll keep an eye on it though, and watch the pro-gov people in the coming weeks.

There are two things wrong with our Health Care system.
1) We're bleeding nurses and doctors because other countries (Like the USA) are headhunting them and offering signing bonuses, moving costs and higher salaries.
2) We're refusing foreign-trained doctors and nurses because of a poorly written agreement re: the transition of skills and/or certification from other countries.

Basically, the majority of our woes that you hear about (waiting lists), comes from lack of personnel...and NOT lack of skills or training in the personnel we have, nor because of poor equipment, nor even because of our socialist ideals as to how our medicare is paid for.

Why are Canadians going to American Hospitals? Long delays for specialists, treatment and surgery.
Why are there delays? Lack of medical staff.
Why are delays such a big deal to some people? Because some people feel that they shouldn't have to wait like everyone else, have money to burn and want to skip to the front of the line.

So then, if doctors & nurses can get better reimbusement for their services & education, they will. If not, are they likely to find other work?

There are spots open... negative unemployment in the health fields up here. What we don't have is 'for profit' hospitals that can afford to double-up the salary because they're charging $900/night for a semi-private room

Perhaps if they weren't forced to give away thier goods & sevives, we wouldn't have $900/night rooms either

Nope....there are positions available that aren't being filled - coupled with docs/nurses/orderlies leaving posts and not being replaced because of a lack of trained personnel.

Unemployment assumes that there are people looking and no jobs for them (currently 8% in Canada). Zero unemployment is all jobs filled and all people (who are employable) employed.

why is that?
is there no unemployment, or is it in the training?

It's called brain drain.

they are offered higher salaries elsewhere.

government is working on it, paid university and you work where you are assigned for 10 years, etc.

I'll add #3
3) Many Doctorate Program spots at Universities are going to foreign students, who graduate and promptly go back home.
4) Quebec only: Idiotic GVTs are refusing to hire Allophone nurses because their French is less than perfect, even though Francophone nurses' own grasp of their mother tongue is often tenuous at best.

that one is iffy, I remember that one at the Jewish General, they nurses couldn't speak french at all.

I remember an article about the French written test applied to allophone nurses alone...and how Francophone nurses failed the same test when it was applied to them.

There have been numerous discussions lately in Quebec about both language issues and certification transfer. The Obama Healthcare debate down south is waking up our little ogre.
