Santa Monica Hit by Cabir Cell Phone Virus

Santa Monica is the new home to America's first cell phone virus according to security experts.

Dubbed "Cabir", the virus was found on display phones at a Santa Monica, California retail store.

The Finnish security company F-Secure who first spotted the virus, says that Cabir could infect nearby cell phones and smartphones which use bluetooth technology.

According to experts, the pesky virus mostly is a drain on cell phone batteries.

This is a first...it's a 'weak' virus thus far... the receiver has to accept the file (click Yes) and run the file.

I'd like to think that most people aren't that stupid, but we'll see how that pans out.

Eventually...smarter hackers with more pimples on their faces will get a hold of this and there won't be an 'acceptance' popup anymore. Then we'll see how fast Symantic responds with its anti-viruses and firewalls for cel-phones.

/me is still waiting the first of the nastier Flash viruses.

Most computer virii work that way too. And spread without much difficulty.

That's been making the rounds in Europe and Asia. I saw something on it last month.

I think not...when was the last time you were on a web-site or checking email and a popup asked "Do you want to download the latest version of Socket de trois Trojan? " Yes/No

No Bish, he's right. 80% or 90% of all viruses out there require you to install an active X control or open and e-mail attatchment or something like that. The ones that can attach themselves to your computer with no action on your part are really rather rare.

What kind of sites are you visiting that you think they're so common??????

Edit: Note that IMO spyware and malware are a much bigger problem than viruses. At least as a sysadmin I spend more time dealing with them. A lot more.

About 12 minutes ago. But thanks for asking.
It asked you if you wanted to download the virus? No...I doubt it. If it required some action on your part like opening an email attachment..that's another story. If your firewall's asking you wether you want to allow a program access to the internet, or your antivirus pops up and says what do you want us to do with virus-X..that's not the virus talking. Viruses are as quiet as they can be...or they don't get around and they don't get talked about online.

We've gone a long way since the "I love you" virus...turn off your firewall for about 20 mins and see how many get through with you just surfing abouts..or hell, just sitting there and doing nothing. Then count how many asked you if they could come in... the latter is likely to be zero...the former...depends on where you're surfing.

Malware and spyware are virii ... they just aren't 'damaging' like what we like to call virii.

.
Here for one...wish I'd kept the log of it..but it must've piggybacked on someone's linked image or something.. . I was in the RW and my symantic firewall popped 4 times in 12 seconds. Trojans. Sockets de trois..all blocked. :D
