CLINTON DISAPPOINTMENT: LEFT OFF FUNERAL SPEAKERS LIST

Former President Bill Clinton has privately expressed anger he has apparently been left off the speakers list of Friday's Reagan State Funeral, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

"President Clinton really held out all hope the funeral would be a nonpartisan event, like Nixon's was," a top Clinton source said on Tuesday morning. "He's angry and disappointed neither he nor President Carter have been asked to speak, as of yet."

The top source says Clinton has been critical that both Bush presidents will address the crowd gathered at National Cathedral.

Nixon's vice president Gerald Ford did not speak at Nixon's funeral.

Clinton's inner circle is convinced Nancy Reagan has personally shut out Clinton from any high-profile participation.

"It is a state funeral, using tax dollars," the top Clinton insider explained.

Former President George H.W. Bush, former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney will join President Bush in eulogizing Ronald Reagan, Reagan's office announced. Presiding over the service will be former Sen. John Danforth of Missouri, who is an ordained Episcopal priest. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and the Rabbi Harold Kusher will give readings, while Irish tenor Ronan Tynan will sing.

The eulogy is being prepared by President Bush's chief speechwriter, Michael Gerson, who also wrote the president's moving speech for a memorial service in the same cathedral after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Will he ever just go away?

Clinton Gets $10 Million Advance for Reagan Eulogy
(2004-06-08) -- Former U.S. President Bill Clinton today signed a $10 million contract with Knopf for his soon-to-be released eulogy of President Ronald Reagan.

Mr. Clinton was not invited to speak at Friday's state funeral for the 40th president, because he has yet to complete the 1,000 page manuscript of the eulogy.

"Clinton's eulogy for President Reagan is filled with personal reflections on his childhood in Arkansas and his tumultuous marriage to Hillary," according to a unnamed publishing insider. "It's packed with amusing anecdotes and a couple of brief, but powerful references to President Reagan--one in the third paragraph of page 437 and the other at the bottom of page 902. It's a majestic non-partisan tribute, which he promises will be ready later this year, or early next."

Will he ever just go away?
Evidently not, but if we get him to, we need to make sure he takes the wicked witch of the wherever she's from this week with him. :D

you know...i can't think of anything more personal (and even partisan) than a funeral...do you think that reagan would want clinton to speak at his funeral? who gives a fig if bill feels shunned...it's not his funeral...reagan wasn't his friend...and nancy can shut out whomever she chooses from speaking at her husbands funeral.

Did anyone here see the Larry King interview of Mulroney? It went well up until the end...then King thanked Mulroney and turned to the camera...

"That was Brian Mulroney....former Prime Minister of Great Britain"

I think that his suspenders are on a wee bit too tight, eh?

:confuse3:

Reagan speaking at the Republican National Convention, 1992 on Clinton:

This fellow they've nominated claims he's the new Thomas Jefferson. Well let me tell you something; I knew Thomas Jefferson. He was a friend of mine, and Governor... You're no Thomas Jefferson!

Imagine: a eulogy spoken for the man who respected the office he held so much....

By the man who dropped his pants many a time in that same oval office.

Ronnie would sit up in his casket! ;)

I think Carter, however, would have been a great choice as a speaker. A great humanitarian himself and the sitting president who Reagan defeated to come to power. And a real god fearing man. And a great symbol of the bipartisan nature of this event. Say what you want about his politics (if you really feel the need to reduce this much larger event to a petty opportunity for a political pot shot) but Carter is a great and decent human being and would have no doubt done Reagan honor with his speech.

Where the hell did people get the idea that this was a bipartisan event? The people at funerals tend toward friends & colleagues not ideological enemies.

ps-I'm pissed that the great MN Senator, Paul Wellstones funeral arrangement the Democratic Party concocted didn't invite Hentry Kissinger to speak. ;)

Exactly.

The STATE funerals of PRESIDENTS are gonna be a little different then Joe Blow Im afraid. Of course theres going to be massive political importance involved in who is invited and Im guessing not every single person on that guest list was best buddies with ole Ron. Who attends his burial and final services in Cali and what they do there is a whole different matter. I think you are getting the two confused. And I hardly think its blasphomy to suggest Carter of all people say a word or two. I think the symbolism of him doing that would only be for the best.

Oh by the way Gonz thanks for allowing me to repost this:

It had nothig to do with Carter speaking or not. I am amazed at the number of people who thought funerals are bipartisan. Remember back to Sen Wellstone...they specifically disinvited VP Cheney.

I thought that whole affair was handled disgustingly myself. Rule number ONE: never boo at a funeral. I dont care if Hitler is making a speech.
