Researching for a cheap cheap system. Has to be under $300 (US). Need a motherboard, CPU, RAM, case, video, hard disk, and CD-ROM... Any suggestions? This is purely for office use.

case $30 http://www.directron.com/blacmidatxca.html
duron 800 $22 http://www.directron.com/duron800.html
300w PS $19 http://www.directron.com/30atxpowsup3.html

Check out the deals at Best Buy for RAM, HDD, and CDRW.

YOu can get a cdrw from $19-29 after rebates

Best Buy also has a 40gb hdd for $60 after rebates

they have had 128mb pc133 for $10 after rebates the past few weeks also

For a MoBo what about Biostar M7VIG (so you can use DDR Ram later)
or what about the Biostar M7VIQ with integrated video if you dont' care about DDR

So whats that, another $60 for the MoBo

so where are we

$30 case
$19 Power supply
$22 Duron 800
$10 128mb PC133
$60 40gh HDD
$60 MoBo
-----------------------
$201

now you need a video card, modem, and some fans.

I'm sure you want to go with something faster, but this is ghetto cheap

I just built two budget systems for my parents for christmas.

I was trying to stay under $400 each (unsucessfully) so I have an idea what you might be looking for.

you probably want the most performance you can find for $300 though. I would!!! Just replace the duron 800 with an althlon xp 1700 from newegg, and the mobo with something more substantial and some DDR Ram to go with it.

Both Directron and newegg are great, very quick and no problems. Both are a little high relative to other companies on pricewatch though, in my opinion. So you can shave off more going with cheaper etailers. Best Buy was great to, especially with those rebates!!!

just a though, you didn't specify performance standards, only price.

actually I went with this a Biostar Motherboard M7VIP from newegg, and 1700 + xps. That an sticks of kingmax pc2700. But I expect it might push you over the $300 limit you set. But maybe not depending on what you have lying around.

Don't ask me why all the biostar garbage. I don't know why I considered them so much myself. But they did seem to offer the most bang for the $ for a non OC'd basic system.

i always buy from newegg, never had problams before, although i just had my first problem, a 256M DIMM labelled 512M (factory error), but they've handled it so quickly it makes it all better. i don't usually look at directron but everyone i know has good luck there too. their prices are a bit higher than pricewatch but i'd rather spend a little more and always be happy than get jerked around by some snake oil e-dealer.
IMHO, buying a cheap system is a terrible thing to do to yourself.
some performance specs would be nice too.
