AFAIK, the cars are quite secure and have low emissions. :shrug:

Laugh if you want, but they used to Stop Ladas from going through. Seems the people in the militarily oriented town of Platsburg and its surrounds wouldn't sell gas to anyone driving a russian made car. Since they didn't want drivers getting stranded, the border cops would turn them back. So if you were heading south from Mtl, you had to pop off the Lada tags and replace them with Fiat ones. That, of course, made the car completely acceptable.

Is it specifically Renaults that can't be brought in? I've seen several cars in California with Mexican plates, but it's always been cars like the Chrysler Neon.
