Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Despite a sharp Russian rebuke over the matter, Czech and Polish leaders say they will most likely respond favorably to allowing the United States to build part of its missile defense system within their territories.
Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek and Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski said they would allow the United States to build a missile interceptor site in Poland and radar station in the Czech Republic if the U.S. decided to request use of those areas.
However, the defense system, which the U.S. says is designed to guard against possible missile attacks from the Middle East or North Korea, has caused quite a stir in neighboring Russia.
Although, U.S., Czech and Polish government officials assured Russia its sovereignty and security would not be compromised by the new missile defense system close to its western borders, Russian officials expressed sharp opposition to the plan.
During a news conference, Russian General Nikolai Solovtsov warned Poland and the Czech Republic about permitting U.S. use of its sites, threatening possible action if the counties go ahead with the missile defense plan.
"If the governments of Poland and the Czech Republic take such a decision, the strategic missile force will be able to aim at these installations," General Nikolai Solovtsov said.
General Solovtsov also warned that Russia could easily withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), signed by Moscow and Washington in 1987, saying "all the technical documentation remains and restarting their production will not be difficult."
