DALSA SEMICONDUCTOR has announced that it has "successfully fabricated and delivered" the world's first 111 megapixel CCD.

With a total resolution of 111,000,000 pixels (10,560 pixels x 10,560 pixels) this crazy thing measures only four by four inches. Dalsa claims that it is the first imager to break the 100 million pixel barrier.

[Snap] Dalsa says it delivered the chippery to its client Semiconductor Technology Associates, which said it was asked to develop the chip for the Astrometry Department of the U.S. Naval Observatory, funded by the Navy’s Small Business Innovation Research Program.

The device will apparently be used to determine of the positions and motions of stars, solar system objects and the establishment of celestial reference frames.

Dalsa Semiconductor manufactured the device for STA at its wafer fabrication facility in Quebec. µ

:eek5: I need a camera with that kind of resolution. Not really, but I could do my peeping from the comfort of space, or something. :nerd:
