Defending Pedophiles (well, almost...)

This thought emerged from a conversation with Altron and Sawheny89 where we all called each other gay for assorted reasons, but afterwards, I had this thought:

It seems rather normal to say that homosexuals are born that way and have no choice in the matter, (which is something that I would usually agree with) but yet, people who are pedophiles (that's paedofiles for those in the UK), necrophiliacs or some other kind of "sexual deviants" are treated as though they are diseased and only need rehabilitation to be "normal"...

Discuss amoungst yourselves...

If I am born with an urge to live in a manner that will harm other individuals, I have a responsibility to keep that urge in check, be it through therapy, staying away from tempting situations and what have you. For a pedophile to live a way that will make him/her happy, another individual will be harmed. I do not think homosexuality can be compared to pedophilia any more than heterosexuality. Consent and harmful behavior is the key.

Ok, but at what point is pedophilia exploitative? If a 19 year old has consenual sex with a 16 year old, and parents press charges for statutory, the older is branded a pedophile, but no one has been harmed or exploited...
 
What you are describing is an abuse of the statutory law. The law was made to protect children from being coerced into sexual activities with adults because in their immature trusting minds adults are there to guide and protect not to hurt.

I'll concede to that and the for the most part irrelevence of that story to the topic at hand.

It simply pisses me off when people get all disgusted about even hearing someone was caught with child porn; did they personally hurt anyone? No. did they choose to be pedophiles anymore than someone chooses to be black or asian?
 
The problem is that one day the porn is not enough...and children make such easy targets :shrug:
It's in a persons protective nature to be concerned about such things. As a parent, I would not be disgusted to find that you had porn of some 16 yr old pretending to be of the age of majority, a la Tracy Lords....what would get me is if you had porn of small children or prepubescent children.

Good point. I would say although they didn't hurt anyone personally the creation of the child porn is damaging to the child.

So possibly it's a simialr situation to recieving stolen property. You personally didn't steal anything but you're encouraging the crime.
 
Alright, but now what about those other people, with fetishes either actually illegal or simply frowned upon? Beastiality, Necro, Scat, Furry... These are people just like me or you, but who simply get hard from something other than what the norm, and are ostracized or imprisoned for it..

It's a nice analogy, but flawed on certain levels, just as there are numbers of levels of pornography. A family man was arrested for taking pictures of his family vacation where his entire family participated in skinny dipping, in what possibly way could the children have been harmed if a camera developer copied them and uploaded them? All I say is that there is a certain measure of a happy medium, and that a study I read (ok, I found it on Digg, so it could be crap) stated that a steady increase in the easy access of pornography coincided with a dramatic decrease in rape, so I say, let them have porn, it should keep them sated!

I'm sure there's many cases where a theft doesn't hurt anybody actually.

Max ... all humans are murderers, rapists, and thugs at their core. That's simple genetics. We live in a society of rules, tho, that say that either you control those impulses, or leave the society. That said ... 100 years ago, having sex with a little child was unremarkable. Happened daily. What's happened is that the rules society regards as important have changed. Same as wimmen being allowed to vote, or blacks to touch whites. Couple of hundred years back, a black man having sex with a white woman recieved the same outrage as a 40 year old with a 12 year old today.

for me ... it's less about the act, as about allowing animal instinct to overrule the societial rules. People who allow themselves to act like that have taken steps away from being men, and towards being animals. Even animals have to obey the rules. A dog can be a beloved family member .... but if it breaks the rules ....*bang*.

Use the search function. I've started a couple of threads in the past asking where you draw the line between kiddyporn, and a nudist's summer photos.

On that note .... I invite people to look up child models on the web and newsgroups. It's the new legal kiddyporn. Little if any actual nudity (perhaps a see through nipple), but 5-12 year olds undressing from street cloths to bras and panties. 5 year olds in thongs with a ribbon around their chest. Or even little crosses of electrical tape over their nipples. There were several news articles about it earlier this week, in fact. Provocative poses and the like .... but fully inside the law.

AFAIK it is not illegal to have a fetish. You can rub poop all over yourself or have your SO pee on you if you wish. You can have sexual relations with your food. You can wrap yourself in latex or saran wrap. You can jack off while watching other peoples feet if the feet owners are willing, etc etc. Bestiality and necrophilia are illegal because you can not get consent for your actions.

This reminds me of something else I wanted to talk (semi-) intellectually about...

I recently saw a movie "Little Miss Sunshine"....

SPOILERS!!!!


In the last few scenes, there is a child beauty contest where every girl but the protagonist is ridiculously oversexed, wearing revealing clothes....that don't actually have much to reveal, and during the talent portion they dance and sing like their adult counterparts (Madonna, Britney, whathave you,...whores) and in the movie's absolute finale, the talent act for the main character involved her wearing clothing like the ringleader of a circus, dancing to, and then stripping to, "I'm too sexy"...at which point everyone gets disgusted and leaves.....there isn't "Risque" anymore, it is either perfectly acceptable or completely abhorrent, there is a line, but it's nearly invisible...

It's a heart warming story of how a little girl's unconditional and unwaivering desire to be a winner inspires a family of depressed losers. It's like a dark comedy, but never more than momentarily depressing. I liked it alot, better than any comedy I've seen recently (not the stupid fart joke type of comedy like Anchorman, although I liked it alot too)

Anyway, by possessing kiddie porn, you may not be directly hurting the chid that was involved, and you may never act on the impulses you have, it may satiate you so that you don't in fact, but.... It does hurt the child. It hurts the child in the same way that buying a mink coat hurts a mink. You may not have done the deed, but you created a demand for it.
