Didn't like the Patriot Act?

Wait til you get a load of round 2.

Instead, the controversial post-9/11 law would be expanded to give the FBI new powers to demand documents from companies without a judge's approval, according to a vote late Tuesday by the Senate Intelligence committee.
One other detail: the FBI may designate that the subpoenas are secret and punish disclosure of their existence with up to one year in prison (and five years if the disclosure is deemed to "obstruct an investigation.")

hmm... Instead of finding the guilty, the entire nation is to be made into a jail and everyone treated as guilty; your very neighbor is to be your jailer. Most clever.

Lifted right out of the East German handbook no doubt.

Yep, calling this "the land of the free" is just going to be a joke before it's over.
The terrorist have already succeeded in setting the 'train' in motion. :crying4:

It is still being prepped.

That is scary. I thought the Patriot Act was bad. Wow our freedoms are becoming more scarce.

This happened way before the terrorists of 9/11. It's been going on since the days of LBJ.

Yeah but I had my head comfortably buried in the sand until then. :D
Still if I knew half of the REAL things that goes on covertly,
I'd probably be like Howard Hughes was. :alienhuh:

I would agree but now after 9/11 it seems to have been much moreso than before. Before it seemed more subtle and more gradual. Now it seems like its happening all at once

And yet, it's still a fairly severe imposition on individual rights. Saying "it's not as bad as that" doesn't make it good or desirable.

I agree. But I think the atmosphere of fear that has been around since 9/11 allows this kind of thing to happen. Not saying it should just that it opened the way for it to happen

Agreed. I'd prefer it went away, right after RICO. The difference is, the Patriot Act strengthens already existing laws. RICO gave full authority to the government to trample our rights. With the Patriot Act, there has to be an activity to investigate. With RICO, one only need suspect you are a bad guy.

When the population was out demonizing gun owners, there was a deafening silence from those left of center. When there were screams about religion being displayed, there was laughter in the streets over other's beliefs. Now there's a little thing called the fourth amendment in the crosshairs, and the grumbles are almost non-existent. If those who value their freedoms are this slow on the uptake, maybe we don't deserve them after all. What the hell am I fighting to protect this country for? If the population won't stand up for itself, then why should I stand up to protect it? Perhaps I should do it for myself. Rights carry responsibilities. It doesn't matter if you enjoy that right, or not, but the one thing you must do is fight for it. Your 'victory' in limiting gun ownership is a loss of a valuable right. It's what makes that little thing called 'illegal search and seizure' so much easier to do. Our complaints about the press will make it easier for the government to shut down the media they don't like, and substitute their own. Hell...they could do it now, and most of us probably wouldn't even know it.

People in general will accept any change that makes them feel safer.

Yeah...until they have to give up something they want. You can either call it selfishness or hypocrisy, but, in the end, it all boils down to the same thing..."I don't like it, so you can't have it."
