I've recommended that he install and use for backup a CD-RW twice that I'm sure I remember. Since he fried 2 of those, he's refused to buy another.

Sucks to be him then :D

If the computers are networked, can't you set up a shared items folder, stick the important stuff in there, and then burn it to a CD on tonksy's machine?

...... He'll only need 6 tapes. 2 for a complete system backup, to be changed when he makes any major changes, 2 for monthly backups, and 2 for weekly backups...this, of course, depends upon how often he adds or removes items/software from his system. ;)

I can't back anything up. You guys obviously don't remember how magnetic my blood is and the black cloud of death luck I have following me. I've owned several CD burners.. none survive the first copy.

Linking to Tonkys comp won't do much good when the material I need to backup is three times larger than her drive.

But you don't have one individual file bigger than 700MB right? That would be an awfully long porno flick.

That's the beauty of it. You just set the backup to start at your regular bed-time (yeah...right... ), and it's finished by the time you wake up. the full backup gets put into a case, and is then hermetically sealed and placed in a safe that has a combination only tonksy knows. The other tapes just stay in the machine. Since it's on an automatic timer, you never have to move them until you do the monthly, or a full backup.

Gato, we had a tape drive at RadioShack, and it was more trouble than it was worth... and that's considering we all were pretty electronically inclined there.

What kind? Most are pretty damned good as long as you're not trying to use the system during backups. The most troublesome was the Iomega DittoMAX drive...of which I am an owner. Those are slow, noisy, and tend to eat tapes after every fifth backup...which is why mine is no longer connected. ;) I still think it was worth it the one time my hard drive bit the dust, though. All I had to do was pull out the old...fdisk...format...and re-install the O/S. Then Pop in the full restore tape and I had everything back. This meant no re-installing all the drivers from CD-ROM, all the software from CD-ROM, and then getting on the net and finding all the recent upgrades and drivers. I just popped in the tape, and went to bed. In the morning, I had my entire setup back with no problem whatsoever.

I've got a few that are 1gb plus. DVD's work pretty good for backing them up though. :)

The tape drive didn't have a brand on it; it was one where you pushed the tape in, and then to eject it you pushed it in again and one time out of five it would pop out. The drive broke and needed replacement twice in the eight months I was there.

DAT drive...I've had bad experiences with those myself. They're great when they work, but those times are few and far between. That's one of the reasons I went with the DittoMAX...that and price.

I'm working on a punchcard system.

Anyone know where I can get my hands on about 50.000.000 of em?

Just use an abacus. They're reportedly faster & more reliable.

Not only is it still called RadioShack here, it's RadioShack Corporation now, not Tandy anymore. Tandy/RadioShack sold off its Canadian division a long time ago and was licensing out the RadioShack name.
