Do-Not-Call List Swamped

The public's simmering frustration with telemarketers erupted Friday as people hurried to sign up for a new national do-not-call list, registering about 635,000 telephone numbers in the program's first 14 hours.

Registration opened just after midnight. As of noon Friday, the program's Web site was being visited 1,000 times every second, according to the Federal Trade Commission, which operates the registry.

We have one here in TN, it seems to work pretty well. I don't know about anyone else, but I can't stand the fuckers.

I've registered. And I hope it works, too. We get tons of calls weekly and it's rather annoying.

we have a similar registry here in MA also. the number of annoying phone calls has dropped to almost zero. now if that only worked for bill collectors and work...

The possibly interesting thing here is whether there will eventually be a Do-not-Spam-E-mail list developed as an extension of this...

I'd be afraid to give out me email address to get it on a "do not spam" list for fear that it would get into the hands of spammers.

I like them.....they are a nice bunch and polite. I feel awkward and terrible hanging up after them. I always think in a emergency when i can't dial and they call atleast i can tell them to call the police...it's rather mundane yes but i would like to have every source of humanity avaliable in time of need.

lol...chances are pretty high that you get some attack, and a telemarketer guy calls. then you have to wait for 3 minutes before you're able to interupt the guy (while dying, of course) and then you politely ask him whether he can call the police...something you could have done at least 6 times in that period of time.

yes, after i hang up on those guys (who always call at the worst possibile moment, interfering in my personal life, unasked for) i feel pretty bad. but that's because i let them waste another 10 seconds of my life.

On out caller Id they come up as unknown number and i usually dont answer, or i pick up and tell then to fuck off

Or you could just click the receiver button and dial 999/911/whatever

Oh come on...these people called to talk. Talk to them. :p I had a guy who called about a boat safety survey three times in two days. He got to talk to Blackbeard the Pirate. The call was over in five minutes, and we both had a good laugh out of it. Well, maybe I did moreso than him. Still can't figure out why he kept calling back (same guy). Maybe he thought I wasn't serious.
