Does one have to be black to be African/American?

Apparently they do in this school

A group of high school students in Omaha, Neb., who nominated a South African student for a "Distinguished African-American Student" award were disciplined for what was described by administrators as an "inappropriate and insensitive" act, reports the Omaha World Herald.

Administrators at Westside High School said the award should only go to a black student. A student who later circulated a petition complaining about the racism inherent in that policy also was punished by the school.

The students nominated their South African friend by putting up some 100 posters around the school supporting his candidacy. The award has been given the last eight years to an outstanding black student as part of the school's Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration.

The title quite plainly states 'african'. Assumption that all Africans are black is silly. The muslim north coast is made up of about 150million non black africans. I guess it needs to be renamed as the subsaharan african-american prize.

And if I were him I'd have my knickers in a knot about it. Who the fuck gives them the right to decide that Africans are necessarily black? I'm lilly white and I'm African - more so than Martin Luther King, Oprah or any of those US rappers who come to SA & claim that they have come 'home' & harp on about their 'brothers and sisters' could ever wish to be - nationality has nothing to do with the colour of your skin fucking retards.

What gets me about people calling themselves African Americans is that a civil war was fought to give them the same status as every other citizen, people died to have the same rights as everyoone else......and now they go and segregate themselves willingly by labelling themselves as something they're not - what's wrong with just being American? When's the last time any of them visited Africa and DID something for their "African brothers and sisters" instead of just claiming our heritage as their own?

And btw - why in the hell is it that Nelson Mandela has suddenly become the 'father' of every black man, woman & child in the world?
 
AT, I've know two black Americans who went to Africa to find their roots. After 6 weeks they came home with their tail between their legs & had to admit they are as African as I'm French. :lol:
 
:lol: Yup....having 'African Roots' may be trendy, but it ain't easy...................hehe, maybe there's a career to be had in teaching black Americans all about being African - don't think too many of them will be scampering off to discover their roots ;)

The country would immediately freeze up and stop, because it's only the wind of special interests keeping it going (at least from their point of view).

Freako, I know plenty of black Americans and the vast majority have no interest in being called black, negro, african-american, etc. They just want to live their lives like everyone else.

so do the ones I know but they would rather be called black.
