Ethanol...

Now that gas prices are going through the roof again, is it time to revisit ethanol as a viable fuel? Let's be honest. The US pays farmers not to plant all of their fields in order to keep the prices down. Why not use that acreage to plant corn, and convert that to ethanol. You may now begin bashing the cost of producing ethanol, but remember...volume moves the prices down. Another plus to using ethanol is the simple fact that siphoning fuel out of a raised tank would be less vile tasting. ;)

They sell 85% ethanol around here, call it E-85. It also sells for about 20 cents cheaper than regular right now too. Only one problem. It doesn't work in all cars. They need a conversion, a fairly expensive conversion. Now, there are cars out there that can run it, and they can run gas as well, mostly the Chrysler minivans and other Chrsyler products.

The conversions usually consist of changing from plastic to metal parts in the fuel system. You know...like cars used to be built? If you do it yourself, the cost drops dramatically.

Can't get more than E15 here, if you can even find that at all. In this area there was only one station (that I know of) that even carried it, and they shut down their pumps and closed up. Ontario has it, but it costs more than regular.

That's because they don't mass-market it. A car made in 1970 will run on straight alcohol with no problems whatsoever...why do modern cars have such a problem with it? (Hint I answered that in my first response in this thread)...
