This is what homophobia looks like
Zanzibar outlaws homosexual acts

Tourism is blamed for a demise of traditional values
Zanzibar's parliament has passed a bill that outlaws homosexuality and lesbianism.
The bill imposes stiff penalties which include up to 25 years imprisonment for those in gay relationships.

The overwhelmingly Muslim Indian Ocean island is a key tourist destination on the East African coast.

The attorney-general said they were determined to prevent Zanzibari culture from being corrupted. The president is expected to approve the bill into law.

Correspondents say the number of homosexuals and lesbians is on the rise in the Indian Ocean island.

The penalty for those in lesbian relationships will be a seven-year jail term.

A penalty of life imprisonment will be imposed on anyone found guilty of sodomising a minor.

The bill was supported by both the ruling Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and the Civic United Front (CUF) - a rare occasion of political unity.

its sad that so many hate what they dont agree with. In this case I think it is homophobia. and what does he mean by corrupt?

We all know that as soon as two gay guys vacation down there, get caught engaging in some butt love, and end up in prison, all kinds of human rights groups will be all over this demanding the release of the gay guys... even though they went to that land and violated that land's law. So the UN will neuter this soon enough.

Unfortunate on 2 levels if what you say happens.

1...Homophobia
2...The interference of the UN on a purely internal matter

Rule #1 when visiting a foreign country. Honor their laws if no harm comes to you for doing so. If their laws are against your vacation enjoyment, don't visit there. ;)

Why do you suppose that so many idiots can't understand this one simple concept?

Sory Gonz, I find this to be a conclusion of the slippery slope argument. I know you don't think so, but it seems clear enough to me.

Because, instead of being intelligent, we've become a country of 'victims'. Everybody has 'rights', but nobody wants the inherent responsibilities...

Any time you have a sudden, or major, shift in a moral code, you will have a backlash of some sort. Homosexuality has always been a taboo in the worlds societies, and homosexuals have been persecuted for centuries. It's not really a slippery slope. More like a swirling funnel...

I agree. Well, Gato put it in a more interesting light but the concept is still there. However, I'd bet the kitchen sink that if we overturned stupid sodomy laws...no, if we amended stupid sodomy laws without fanfare & they homosexual community STFU & went on with their lives, very few would give a rats ass. It's when they step in & want to chage the foundation of our communities that the people get all huffy.

Well, a fair few of us, anyway. ;)

Historically, that's not true. Prior to the christianisation of the western world, homosexuality was an accepted practice in quite a few places. Greece for example.

The squeeky wheel gets the grease. If the laws were quietly changed, life'd be great...except that the laws wouldn't be changed without all the noise that's being made now, by the gay minority.
It's a visious circle...but that's democrac for you.

Interesting, but doesn't really prove that homosexuality was an accepted practice in any other place but the Mediterranian Greek and Roman areas before Christianity. What about the rest of the world? Ancient Egypt...The Middle East...Southeast Asia...China...they existed, were more civilized IMO, and had higher populations, and no mention is made of those areas. Too 'Eurocentric'...

You do realize that every one of those civilisations went down in flames, doncha?

no but I dont know of many myths or historical figures or anything to say it was accepted there

If BoP had limited her statement to mean Southern Europe, then I'd have to agree with her...but there's a big difference between "quite a few" and "a few". ;)

Homosexuality has been acknowledged in China since ancient times. According the scholar Ji Yun of the Qing Dynasty, already at the very beginning Huang Di, legendary king and founder of the Chinese culture, had male lovers. This is naturally not very trustworthy because whether there was really a person called Huang Di is not very clear.

That's most likely false.

Scholar Pan Guangdan (潘光旦) came to the conclusion that nearly every emperor in the Han Dynasty had one or more male sex partners. There are also descriptions of lesbians in some history books. It is believed homosexuality was popular in the Song, Ming and Qing dynasties. Chinese homosexuals did not experience high-profile persecution comparable to that received by homosexuals in Europe during the Middle Ages.

Strange that his conclusion is that nearly every emporer had male sex partners. Why? Because 'Modern' China is extremely anti-Emporer. They had a revolution to throw off that very yoke, and now seek to discredit anything that has to do with that part of their history. I'm not saying this person is lying. Just that his motives are suspect.

As for the Japanese, they had a population-control issue for most of their history. Since birth-control devices common today were nowhere to be found then, it was of necessity that some of their population *ahem* refrain from procreation. Small islands cannot support a large population. ;)
