The blackmarket that comes along with prohibition of illicit drugs is what the problem is. How do you get rid of that black market? Let the gubment make themselves useful and regulate the stuff and keep the prices well below blackmarket value.
And that would defeat the purpose of the government to
keep people under the influence of illegal narcotics. Remember how it all started? Only the extremely rich and the extremely poor used to be the drug users in the US, and the government was content to let them consume all they wanted as long as they kept to themselves. They staged an occasional raid, but the problem was not widespread. As time went on, the problem, like any cancer, spread to the healthy part of our society...the middle class. That's when the 'war on drugs' started. Once the tax base was threatened, the government jumped into action.
Want to stop the drug problem? Make it a capital offense to have any amount unless prescribed by a doctor. If the doctor makes a habit of handing out prescriptions, the the doctor is charged accordingly, and if convicted of trafficing, they, of course, get the death penalty. Do this for everyone...no plea bargains, no appeals, and no leniency. It
is quite harsh, but that's what a punishment
should be.
Now for the kicker...anyone convicted of evidence tampering gets the same penalty as the accused.
