Germany is messed up

The regional Schwaebisches Tagblatt newspaper quoted German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's justice minister, Herta Daeubler-Gmelin, as saying "Bush wants to divert attention from his domestic problems. It's a classic tactic. It's one that Hitler used.

So now we have Germans comparing us to Hitler so they can score points with their anti-American constituencies? We should make Germany and Schroeder pay a price for this. If it were up to me, we'd call our ambassador home, close the German embassy in the US and tell Schroeder and the rest of the Germans that they can drop dead as far as we're concerned. They're worse than useless as far as the 'war on terrorism' is concerned anyway right? So let's send a little message to the world via Germany. Let's let everyone know that foreign politicos are not going to get away with demonizing Americans in general or our President in particular without damaging their relationship with America.

UPDATE 1: In our comment section, John K asks, "What and how would be a good way of average people to officially protest what that official has said?" Sending an email to the German Embassy would be a good way to start. Here is the website: http://www.germany-info.org/relaunch/index.html

UPDATE 2: Herta Daeubler-Gmelin backtracks after feeling the heat:

The minister said she called U.S. Ambassador Dan Coats earlier Friday to make it clear that she had not made the reported comparison. "I want to contribute to clearing away shadows, if there are any," she said.

The chief editor of the Schwaebisches Tagblatt said Friday he stood by the remarks as reported, insisting that several witnesses had confirmed Daeubler-Gmelin's choice of words. The editor, Christoph Mueller, also said his reporter had checked the wording with Daeubler-Gmelin herself when she telephoned to clarify her remarks.

Can we PLEASE for the love of all things just recall our Ambassador to Germany?

OK...so the way I see it. You want the US to yank the ambassador from every country who has a mid high functionary spout off with a dippy dispariging comment? Reel it in hormone-boy.

I just thought it was a good idea... got it from www.rightwingnews.com. And it would scare the shit out of Germany.

You read BBC don't you? Thats reliably left of center. I don't see the problem with reading rightwingnews.com.

the bbc don't run propaganda that asks for email petitions. it is way more objective than that.

That was a personal request by the author and it was clear. Besides he responded to a question from a user.

it is not the first article that has had a petition or similar basis, some of the other stuff posted from there has been as well. as a basis for objective and balanced journalism i would question it, because of its clear bias complete pictures and information is less likely to be given.

as a consequence purported factual information would have to be treated with a degree of caution. this comes from a journalistic and research basis, which is the direction from which i read all articles.
