Maybe if he was a criminal he'd be okay.

Christianity in Great Britain is imploding, fragmenting and will soon be driven underground, says a senior adviser to Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams.

Jayne Ozanne told Williams and Archbishop of York David Hope that a time of great persecution for the church is coming, reports the Times of London.

In a private report to the pair, Ozanne warned the outlook for the church was not good – that it would continue to implode and self-destruct over homosexual clergy and other issues. She says that its future will be one of an underground movement comparable to resistance movements during World War II.

don't confuse christianity with the church - the outlook of the church may be poor but large numbers of the uk public still consider themselves christian to my knowledge. that they fail to support the institutions of the faith does not necesarily mean they fail to be christian, just that they no longer see the relevence of the institution.

the first paragraph from ris bbc link

The Archbishop of York, the Church of England's second most senior clergyman, says he would be "hard-pushed" to say Britain was a Christian country.

ris, can you get him online? I'd like to witness that debate :D

I dunno... "considering" and actually being is two different ideals... in fact those who "consider themselves Christian" are probably those who follow the big 10... Commandments which are similar or the same as in the vast majority of religions... they could just as well "consider themselves followers of Islam"

I hear the death knells...

Christianity in Great Britain is imploding
While I believe that you shold be free to believe what you want, it has long puzzled me why this hasn't happened all over the world. Not even just christianity, but all religion.

Because most 'liberals' see the Christian church as the big dog...and they're much less likely to be killed by a fanatic. Pick on the Islamic faith, and you'll get nutcases coming out of the woodwork with murder on their minds.

Sorry, what I meant was that, for most of my life, I have seriously believed that religion has long outlived it's time and usefulness. Eventually, I think it will all but disappear, but I don't expect that to be pretty. Just a personal viewpoint.

I think that's a bit optimistic, chic. Honestly, I don't think that religion is gonna go away any time soon. There'll always be some sort of life philosophy that'll dog humanity.

uk census 2001

the quote from the bishop merely supports my statement, i don't think i could be all that wrrong in saying that by christian he would mean his own brand. accoridng to the census there are at least 36 million uk citizens who assign themselves the value christian. there's a fair discrepancy there.

What about the God gene? ;) Are you going to discriminate against those who have this religious gene now, and force them to abandon their DNA driven urges? :lol2:

Only as much as any one would discriminate against those with the same "addiction gene" or electrical activity in the brain giving a predisposition for alcohol dependancy, drug abuse, excessive shopping, gambling, sex addiction.

Allegedly it is all the same "problem"... if it wasn't God.. it'd be booze, sex or the gee-gees!
