Has anyone else heard this or is it just me?

I heard around here (Indiana) there were rumors the Government is going to go back to drafting everyone 18 and older into the army/navy, with a $500,000 fine if you refuse.

Now, I know times of war are shitty, and we should feel so lucky to have an opportunity to defend our country, but this could be considered a little hasty.

The worst thing to add to an army is a shitload of rebellious 18 year olds joining up against their will.

Whether these rumors are true or not, I may not know for a while, but the thought sends chills down my spine. Not many people would want to pay the $500,000 refusal fee, so there could be serious repercussions. Would it not be sensible and preferrable to proceed with a smaller army of people who joined up because they wanted to, than to go on with a large army of cocky 18 year olds who couldn't give a shit for anything except rap music, sex, and drugs? (That's the stereotype of most 18 year olds in the US nowadays, isn't it?)

don't you know, fury, the army makes a man of you. ;)

btw, bbc news had nothing on it

Your government is going to draft everyone over 18 into the army? You mean soon? So everyone will be called to active service? WTF? ?(

I don't think you need that many troops for your war on terror. ;) Maybe the USA has the intention to take over the world or something.

*picks up his oozy and heads for the border* :D

It's not very likely, is it? There's been some talk about forcing kids to do some sort of community service in order to graduate, or somesuch. I don't think they would want them in the military though. The idea of letting them off by paying $500,000 doesn't ring true. It would cause a firestorm of controversy if rich kids could get out of military service while poor ones had to fight and possibly die.

They've just done that here in Ontario, they have to do 40 hours in order to graduate. This is the first year it's come into effect.

it's just started this year, so it applies only to those who entered school in 2002 and on, so we're not going to know for at least 3 years

i have news for ya. if a real war ever breaks out, they will draft anyone they can get as long as the person can stand up. women will get drafted too. i don't think the draft is coming back soon unless something drastically changes.

You already have to register with selective service when you turn 18, there just isn't any active draft.

And it doesn't look to happen anytime soon.

The penalties for not registering are already severe.

Failure to register, or otherwise comply with the Military Selective Service Act is, upon conviction, punishable by a fine of up to $250,000, imprisonment for up to five years, or both. In addition, federal and certain state laws require registration as a prerequisite for obtaining student financial aid, job training, government employment, and U.S. citizenship.

Forced servitude is slavery, whether it's forty hours or forty years. The government has no right to force students to perform community service in order to graduate.

(In truth, the government has no business running schools and universities, but that's another issue.)
