Has anyone else heard this or is it just me?

i assume that its written in as a requirement of the course before the students enrol, otherwise they could decide to opt out.
we certainly have to do that at the uni of wales, cardiff.
as such, its not forced because they knew about it before, and could choose not to join the course if it was a big issue.

no, here it's a requirement to receive a high school (secondary school) diploma.

What I gathered from Leslie's post was that it's not a course requirement, but a nationwide university requirement. In that case, it's not possible to opt out unless you simply don't go to college. I don't know if Canada has private colleges or not, but that doesn't really matter. The real point is that the state is attempting to force a particular ethical point of view on students, that of altruism, the belief that virtue consists of self-sacrifice. The state should be neutral on questions of personal morality.

ah i see, in which case, whole last post waste of time :)

sounds like a social agenda to me, how awful. ;)

Which just makes it that much worse, since a high school diploma is that much less optional, and they're attempting to impose their beliefs on younger students.

could be worse, you could make 'em stand up every morning and swear to a god you might not believe in, i'm sure that's indoctrination ;)

j/k :)

I don't necessarily think it's worse, but it's bad enough. Hope the 9th circuit cout's decision sticks on that one, but the Supreme Court will probably overturn it. Too many 'right-wing extremists' of the religious conservative sort on the SC, not enough laissez-faire capitalists. ;)
