U.S. and Venezuelan rhetoric is heating up as officials are trying to resolve a dispute after Venezuelan customs authorities seized diplomatic baggage from the United States that contained military hardware.

According to the New York Times, analysts say the conflict may be a prelude to worsening relations. It began Thursday when Venezuela seized the cargo, and intensified Friday when the country’s attorney general initiated an investigation into whether the U.S. Embassy violated customs law when it brought 20 diplomatic bags into the country.

The violation of the diplomatic bag protocol is 10x worse an infraction as it undermines long standing international treaties.

Just call it 1/10 of 1% payback for the 3,000,000 tons of cocaine brought in against our laws from them over the last 30 years.

How does the US Embassy violating customs law make Chavez an idiot?

Here we go again, America the great Saten... This shit is getting old..

1) A US embassy is American soil as much as LA or New York City.

2)This is the same as opening personal mail.

And finaly...

The cargo, delivered by a C-17 military transport plane, included ejector seats apparently intended for Venezuelan combat jets and about 180 pounds of chicken that did not pass through sanitary inspection, Interior Minister Jesse Chacón Escamillo said Friday night.

The first looks like it had been intended as a freindly offer to the government of Venezualia..

The chicken looks like it could have been intended for a dinner engagement for the embassy. As far as why it was not put through inspection see reason one...

Finaly, what I will put past you is, How would you feel if you sent a letter to you signifisent other (political correctness can :faptard: ) and be arrested AND charged with being a pedophile...

Chevez is a socialist..

Socialist=communist...

There are no personal secretes in a communist state...

I understand who he is & what he stands for, my point was diplomatic protocol. Break that & koffee kicks ass.

1. I didn't make any reference to America the Great Satan

2. American soild or not stuff has to pass through non-American soil to get to the embassy.

3. No it's not the same as opening personal mail. There are quite a few differences.

4. I can't imagine the connection you're trying to make between being arrested as a pedophile and this situation.

Venezuelan Interior Minister Jesse Chacon countered with charges U.S. officials had bypassed customs and required paperwork by transporting 16 packages in violation of international law.

"They brought in food goods without any health controls, they brought in armaments without any legal control," Chacon told reporters. "Everything that doesn't pass through customs is contraband, we are talking about contraband here."

The minister said only four packages out of 20 were considered diplomatic baggage covered by international protocol.

Come on. It costs him nothing and gets him on the news. What did you think was going on.

Diplomats are immune from search. Horseshit it may be but protocol worldwide it is.

Article 22 & 27

Article 22 doesn't apply here and article 27 could correlate to what they were saying with "They brought in food goods without any health controls, they brought in armaments without any legal control," Chacon told reporters. "Everything that doesn't pass through customs is contraband, we are talking about contraband here."

1. The receiving State shall permit and protect free communication on the part of the mission for all official purposes. In communicating with the Government and the other missions and consulates of the sending States, wherever situated, the mission may employ all appropriate means, including diplomatic couriers and messages in code or cipher. However, the mission may install and use a wireless transmitter only with the consent of the receiving State.

2. The official correspondence of the mission shall be inviolable. Official correspondence means all correspondence relating to the mission and its functions.

3. The diplomatic bag shall not be opened or detained.

4. The packages constituting the diplomatic bag must bear visible external marks of their character and may contain only diplomatic documents or articles intended for official use.

5. The diplomatic courier, who shall be provided with an official document indicating his status and the number of packages constituting the diplomatic bag, shall be protected by the receiving State in the performance of his functions. He shall enjoy personal inviolability and shall not be liable to any form of arrest or detention.

6. The sending State or mission may designate diplomatic couriers ad hoc. In such cases the provisions of paragraph 5 of this article shall also apply, except that the immunities therein mentioned shall cease to apply when such a courier has delivered to the consignee the diplomatic bag in his charge.

7. A diplomatic bag may be entrusted to the captain of a commercial aircraft scheduled to land at an authorized port of entry. He shall be provided with an official document indicating the number of packages constituting the bag but he shall not be considered to be a diplomatic courier. The mission may send one of its members to take possession of the diplomatic bag directly and freely from the captain of the aircraft.

Where's liberal reading of the contract?

If the just the chickens were part of 4 out of 20 that were actually diplomatic baggage then "official use" would be taking liberties at the least. If they weren't part of the diplomatic baggage then there's still a problem.

Diplomatic pouches are allowed to contain only certain items.

if there is ANY suspicion they are allowed to be searched, in the presence of an official of the country sending receiving it.
