8 minutes ago By SIOBHAN McDONOUGH, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Preliminary tests of a white powder discovered in a Senate office building Monday were positive for the potentially deadly poison ricin, the U.S. Capitol Police chief said.

Story

 Damn,I hope the catch these culprits and :grim:

Ricin, derived from the castor bean plant, can kill within days. Twice as deadly as cobra venom, ricin is relatively easily made. It may be inhaled, ingested or injected

Like thats not going to encourage copycats

This can't be true, Gonz...you told us we were safer cuz of Dudya. Who would dare try that with Dudya in office?

Jury is still out on the ricin tests Gonz. The police lab had positive and negative tests. The definitive tests will be done around 8:30 of 9:00 eastern.

does this mean that dubya is going to start a war on "national terrorism"? :p

gee, those 'axis of evil' are about everywhere...

on the more serious side: it's sad that nobody can be safe anywhere anymore...:(

It is tremendously sad. And I think this proves that no matter how much you try to fight it, the tactics of people like this are almost impossible to defend against. Just when we start feeling safe again, wham.

you'd started to feel safe? :alienhuh:

I've been going on the assumption that it hasn't even begun to begin yet...just waiting for the other shoe to drop

question is: will all these efforts against "international terrorism" really contribute on the safety?
things happened in the past as well, and things will happen in the future.

we just don't live in a world where nothing bad happens. and i just can't help thinking that, in some cases, the harder we try to fight terrorism, the harder the terrorists strike back...

I'm afraid you're right Shadow, the harder we fight, the sneakier they get. It's all well and good if they all hide out in the mountains where we know where they are, or at least close to where they are, but they're not anymore. They are part of the society now, living with us, working with us, just waiting. That's what scares me.

nobody ever was 100% safe. that is scary. and as PT said the harder we try to be safe the harder they will try.

i know, and it is scary. but what bothers me is this: at what point does the effort to fight crime/terrorism become a substantial part of the problem?
it's one thing to fight terrorism, but to what cost? the joy of life can easily be taken away by becoming completely focused on protecting yourself or the country you live in.
at a certain point the fear of terrorism becomes worse than the suffering caused by it.
of course i'm not saying that we should just let things be, and accept terrorism as something that is just present in our society, but i'm afraid that the war against terrorism can easily go too far.

Oh it certainly can, namely in the Patriot act and the Patriot act 2 that has happened and is still trying to happen here in the states, the people are willing to give up their basic rights to fight this, not realizing those rights probably won't ever be returned to them. I've pondered the same thing, at what point is the fight not worth fighting anymore, and I wish I had an answer. I want to see terrorists brought to justice, yet I don't want to live under martial law.

there is a fine line but the question is where. I still would like to think the Ben Franklin quote were true but it doesnt seem to be relevant today. or at least to those who want safety

from the Washington Post http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A8403-2004Feb3.html :
Six of the first eight tests conducted on the powder Monday showed that the substance could be ricin, a colorless, odorless poison that can be readily distilled in small quantities from castor beans and which has no known antidote. But false positives are not uncommon with ricin, according to experts, and a sample arrived Tuesday morning at Fort Detrick, Md., where the army has an advanced laboratory for testing.

"We haven't finished any testing," said Fort Detrick spokesman Chuck Dasey. Dasey said the lab will release the test results to the Department of Homeland Security probably no earlier than the end of the day Tuesday.

the only saving grace is
"...generally ricin doesn't lend itself to [mass contamination]," he said. "It's more likely to affect just one person as opposed to a lot of people like anthrax."

One reason for that is because ricin, unlike anthrax, doesn't "aerosolize" to contaminate large areas through the air.
