Losers on the US lottery on imperialism

...

of all those countries, where are we still ruling? I'm still trying to figure out why we are considered an Empire building nation.

Puerto Rico--Protectorate (practically the 51st state)
Cuba--Military presence
Germany--Large military presence
Japan--Large miltary presence (my son is staioned there)
Phillipines--Large military presence

Now, I will grant you that the Romans exerted more control over their subject lands, but they still ran most of their day to day business through the local authority. They just left garrisons of legionnaires. Sound faniliar?

I think the real point is, it doesn't matter what we think, it matters what the rest of the world thinks. What happens if they decide we have to be stopped. WWIII.

You're absolutely right. One huge difference betwen the Romans & the US is; if they asked us to leave, we'd fight, beg & holler but we would leave. If you think our staying is ugly, imagine if we left.

Weren't we out of Cuba (militarily) before Castro came to power? I'm unsure.

That wasn't Gonz's question freako. I think he may be right, though, the base opened after the Bay of Pigs, I think.

Gonz, I was pointing out why other countries consider us "imperial." This is how a lot of other countries see us, it's part of the reason for terrorism, and no, I don't think it justifies terrorism, but understanding your enemy is very important and they think they're justified. I don't even think we should close all these military bases, but I understand why they worry the countries that they're in or near.

no but do think about it this way. we still have military there. why is that? do we need them there? and is it welcomed there? weve been seen as imperial even if we are tehre for altruistic purposes:)rofl4: sicne we are doing it for our own needs and such

1. Guantanamo Bay was open before Cuba went Communist. The US still pays a lease for the property, which Cuba refuses to use, and returns the check.
2. There are only approximately 600 US soldiers in the Phillipines at this time. More may be on the way, if the Phillipine government asks for assistance. From Mt Pinatubo up until 9/11, the US presence in the Phillipines was practically nil (Embassy guards and a handful of advisors).

Thanks, Gato. Guess if I weren't lazy I could have looked that up, but now I don't have to. :)

My son has to go to the Phillipines form time to time, but I didn't know our presence was that small.

Japan is not allowed more than a defensive army, by thier Constitution.

We are in Germany & Japan by their invite & both would be economically devastated if we pulled out. We are no longer "needed" in Germany (the Soviet Union collapsed).

Puerto Rico is a comonwealth & they want to keep it that way.

i'd agree that if the us pulled out of germany economically the german government and people would have a very tough time, but i was under the impression that the us had cut its troop deployments there quite a lot [as in the uk]. i'm not sure that the removal of a few hundred thousand troops would necessarily be economically devastating, i think the 100million or however many germans there are can make up the difference.
