While I agree that sick people are sick people regardless of what they watch, listen to, or play on a game, why feed the demon?
I was the stereotypical long haired metal freak in the 80s/90s. As a teenager and beyond I idolized the Blackie Lawlesses/Gene Simmonses/Dee Sniders of the world. I stalwartly defended their onstage antics as showmanship, marketing, and even freedom of expression. Still do. But even then, I thought some folks took it too far for my own personal taste. Slayer, for instance. It was and is my opinion that they crossed a line between freedom of expression and just plain old bad taste. Still, they had and have a right to portray themselves in whatever light they choose.
I apply the same thought process here. I feel that this video game delves into the realm of poor taste. Should it be pulled from the shelf? No. Would I allow it in my home? No, unless the kid in residence could intelligently explain to me in words of her own composition the difference between what the game re-enacts and the reality of the murder of an American president. Unless she could clearly state in her own words that while she enjoys a certain element or aspect of the game, she is fully cognizent of the tragedy behind it and that she does not endorse any underlying ideaology that might be associated with it. Then and only then would I be OK with her having it.
Hey, I despise the music this kid listens to when she thinks we aren't listening. When her mom or I are around, it's bad enough by my standards (spoonfed mindless pop without an ounce of originality or purpose, performed by plastic copycat soon-to-be-has-beens who don't write it or play a single instrument). When she thinks we are out of earshot, it's rap-crap. I don't approve of it, but so long as she remains able to effectively speak the English language without axing me questions or blinging me to submission, I can give her that much freedom. When she can no longer express her ideas in a coherent fashion, Snoop Puppy Farts or whatever has to go.
Sorry for dwelling more on music than gaming....it's more my realm. Same standards apply with me though...
