How to deal with terrorists

I would have liked to see them burning the body right where it fell or something...

No, no, no! We must stop and attempt to understand his motivations! We also need to convolute logic so that we can clearly see that we are ultimately at fault (and by we, I mean the US).

If the boy dies while we're discussing the real issues, oh well. Ya can't make an omelette....

1) this wasn't terrorism..it was a kidnapping/hostage situation with a particularly stupid, single person trying to pull it off.

2) if it had been terrorism, you have to know that the gung-ho attitude will only get you so far. Look at Beslan for details.

3) When it comes to terrorism - if we are unwilling to learn from the issues of the past, we are doomed to repeat them. You can't cure a disease without knowing its source...and terrorism is a disease. A moral and intellectual one.

4) The USA wasn't at fault in Beslan...I don't recall anyone saying that they were. You're not to blame for everything.

Beyond all that...I'm glad that this asshole hadn't tied himself to the kid or we'd all be singing a different tune today.

I'm glad that the schmuck is dead... threathening the lives of children is vile. This isn't a terrorist thread though, Alex. not IMHO.

What was the guy's motivation for kidnapping the boy? Was it to use him as a hostage to get his three demands? If so, I don't see how kidnapping one is that much different from kidnapping a few hundred in a Russian school.

Motivation & background are key. If he's some disgruntled BMW assembly worker looking for a boost in medical insurance coverage he's a kidnapper. If he's looking to get Abdul & Muhammed, his Hamas brothers out of the Israeli klink, he's a terrorist.

So then it matters what their motivation is? It matters to understand why people like this do shit like this? Thank you Gonz.

Motivation, as in some psycho-babble "he was abused as a kid" has no bearing as I pointed out.

If you asked that little boy, I'm sure he'd say he was terrorized.

I wasn't necessarily trying to link this particular guy to Saddam and Osama for crying out loud, but what he is doing IMHO is an act of terror....and should be shot on the spot....period.
