i know that some hardline priests have defected to the catholic church over this, nothing stopping the congregation following them i guess.

i think it matters what's in someone's HEART, not what's in someone's pants.

if the Love Of one's Life happens to be the same sex as one, i respect that totally.

Yup, same here. Its not my business to say what can and can't be done, if its your choice and both parties are happy then go for it.

Not having read the link...

I'm wishy-washy on same sex unions. Generally, I think they should be allowed under state rules with a clause that states that religions do not have to allow them. Homosexuality is against most (if not all) religions. The Catholics (as example) should not be forced to perform a ceremony that goes against their teachings. On the other hand, it's a real pisser that long term monogamous couples have no legal right to their "spouse" & his/her possessions, legal matters, etc.

Having read the article, I say this...They have a right to a wedding. Just not a church wedding...unless the church they belong to allows it. Anything else is just whining.

I know a few gay couples...most have been together for over 10 years. I've asked a few of them as to why they want to marry. Ya know what the answer is (beyond the "We love each other")...legal protection. If one of them gets sick, despite how long it's been since they've seen their families, the family members get priority as to what should be done medically/legally/property etc...every time, even if it's a third-cousin once removed who hasn't seen the guy/gal in over 30 years.
In the events of a death...the partner doesn't get squat...even being stripped of insurance money post-mortem because of a clause well hidden in the policy.

Regardless of how you feel about homosexuality, gay-unions etc...you must admit that it's not exaclty fair and humane to do that to couples that have (on average) longer relationship and less 'divorces' than Hets.

Ponder it.

But. This will just be that chance the insurance companies are waiting for to strip "spouse" from all their policies. And they'll have the silent majority agreeing with them.
