I thought you were trying to become a capitalist yourself.

i'm a great believer in doing something you love, that way mot of the time you enjoy your weeks without too much dread.

Well, I wanted to be a teacher, and that's what I'm dong. I only have two students, but at least I'm teaching.

*thinks about going into a huge long discussion about our capitalist society* *thinks she might even beable to use some of it in her essay next week* *decides she's too tired*

Before you go off on capitalism, you should perhaps learn something about it besides what you were taught in school. Capitalism is the economic system that results when government is limited to the protection of individual rights.

I am taking a course on Labour Studies where we learn about Alienation in the work force, Capitalist society (mostly in relation to government and global corporations) and many other issues THANK YOU!

So, maybe before you go off on me you should think that maybe I actually know something. Just cause I'm an engineer doesn't mean I'm ignorant to society and how it works.

"Find a job that you love, and you'll never work a day in your life."

Indeed, both statements are true. When I did a labor studies course though, we actually had a neutral professor. She, yes a very cute she, was honestly unbaised in her teaching which is rather rare for Canada I think. There were four shitdisturbers in the class. Me and three other guys. Thats rightwingers. :p

Me, I'm not conflicted at all. I want that sign. I could do that kind of work. The problem is, I keep giving the shit away instead of charging for it. You people owe me some serious money. Do you realize the value you're getting here? These are high-quality, professional opinions-- or they would be professional, if you guys would just send me some money. I've got a degree and everything. I've read books! I've even got life experience! (And unlike certain younger members of the BB, I've even had SEX!! ) These are good opinions...

:rofl2:

My boyfriend actually heard me laughing at that from the other room... He usually only gets to read the really funny stuff here because he gets curious when I start laughing out loud.

Thanks Ards! :D

, that's GREAT!! I'm so happy for you! I found a link just two nights ago that I thought you might be interested in: the business of photography. I found it in one of the forums on photo.net. Good luck with it and enjoy, I know you will. :)

Lots of stuff there.

So are you guys reading anything by Ayn Rand? FA Hayek? Ludwig Mises, Frederic Bastiat? Henry Hazlitt?

I don't know

I will look into it

Mostly Canadian authors I believe though since we are focusing on the canadian economy.

Ayn Rand :D I will look into the other authors.

The others make the argument for why capitalism works, and why socialism doesn't. Ayn Rand, though, makes the argument for why capitalism is the moral system.

It's simply not enough to show that capitalism produces greater wealth, provides greater freedom, longer life spans, etc. The socialists don't really care if man is better off under capitalism, because, ethically, they are altruists. They believe that people exist to serve others. A system which allows people to pursue their own happiness without reference to others is anathema to them. People must be made to live for others, by force if necessary, because that (in their opinion) is the beginning and end of morality.

It is that ethical viewpoint that Rand attacks. She argues that each person is an end in himself, and has the right to exist for his own sake. Without the moral argument, all the rest is just crying in the wilderness, because, in truth, when it comes down to it, people are more concerned with what is right than with what works. I believe that is true of the vast majority of people in the world.

Most of the ones I listed were Austrian. Bastiat was French. Rand was born in Russia in 1905 and immigrated to the US in 1926 when the Soviets temporarily eased travel restrictions.
