i keep getting these pop-up ads.
they're not connected to any website, as they come up even when no programs are running.
they're supposed to be disguised as system-type windows, gray, with the colored bar and X at the top, and an OK button. they even make a little "doot!" type noise when they come up, like the windows they're imitating would.
they're mostly for porn, or for "you may have a virus!" things. the latter is very very creepy.

i'd like to know what they are, how i got them, and how to get rid of them, if someone would find out for me?

thank you.

(ps: i dont think its related to whatever is making the image stuff not work, as the ads are very recent, and the img stuff problem is months and months old)

Its not a virus:

If your runnign XP:

Heres how to turn it off
"Click Start->Programs->Administrative Tools->Services
Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK"

I'll see if I can find the info to turn it off in Win98

Some more info on it

Win98
Add/Remove Programs.......Windows Setup........System Tools....Details.....WinPopup is last on the list.

Run Ad-aware if you've got it or do a full scan with your anti-virus prog. I kept having problems with JS-NOCLOSE and ads popping up all the time even when I wasn't surfing when I had Kazaa. It drove me round the bend!

Right click on your taskbar, go to Properties, then the advanced tab, make sure Admin tools are checked there.

Thanks for the heads-up. I just shut off Messenger before I get any of this happening to me.
