HOUSTON (AP) -- A group of illegal immigrants who worked for Wendy's International Inc. is suing the restaurant chain because the company fired them after discovering it had missed a deadline for joining a federal program that would have helped them attain legal status.

Why did Wendy's hire them if they weren't legal?

Maybe the Feds can start setting an example with them.

Wendy's spokesman Bob Bertini called it an "extremely unfortunate situation" due to "the mistakes made by others" that began before his company acquired Cafe Express.

They were employed before Wendy's bought Cafe Express...

So, their argument is, "You wrongly obeyed the law and fired us, now we are going to sue you for being legal."

Hell, they'll win millions.

In the end, yes Wendy's employed the illegles. Wendy's had not originaly hired them but absorbed Cafe Express and it's employees...

Once the discovery was made, Wendy's was forced by law to fire the employees because of their illegal status. Immigrants in the program would have been insulated from being fired.

The "program" in reference here had been something out of the 90s for employers to "guest" the workers for citizenship...
