In the land of unintended consequences

Once again, being liberal proves itself to harm, rather than help, the poor.

NEZAHUALCOYOTL, Mexico -- Thick, doughy tortillas roll hot off the conveyor belt all day at Aurora Rosales's little shop in this congested city built on a dry lake bed east of Mexico City.

Using cooking techniques that date to the Mayan empire, Rosales has never altered her recipe. Nor did her father, grandfather or great-grandfather.

On good days, the neighbors line up for her tortillas.

But these are not good days, and sometimes hours pass without any customers.

Mexico is in the grip of the worst tortilla crisis in its modern history. Dramatically rising international corn prices, spurred by demand for the grain-based fuel ethanol, have led to expensive tortillas. That, in turn, has led to lower sales for vendors such as Rosales and angry protests by consumers.

The uproar is exposing this country's outsize dependence on tortillas in its diet -- especially among the poor -- and testing the acumen of the new president, Felipe Calderón. It is also raising questions about the powerful businesses that dominate the Mexican corn market and are suspected by some lawmakers and regulators of unfair speculation and monopoly practices.

Clean air or food...you decide

The Big cartels of the Mexican corn market are liberal and wanted to help the poor?

Now, that IS news!

Does this mean it's a good time to buy corn stock.:D

They just got rid of some big drug lords, can't that land now be planted?:nerd:

i'm struggling with how this is some "liberal" thing.

oh, yep, it's gonz: anything that seems like it might be at all disruptive or less than super duper is obviously result of liberal ideas.

world war 2 - happened becuase of liberals
all those dogs out there with hip displaysia - fuckin' libs did it
earthquakes - obviously an outgrowth of liberalism
the boredom of underemployed, culturally stunted, middle-aged white guys - liberals arranged that, too

I really hate when the conservatives yell & scream & demand cleaner fuel...oh, wait, that would be the liberals.

Bunch a damned numbskulls.

Conservatives don't want cleaner fuel?

"You know we're making ethanol out of corn right now. We're very close to a breakthrough where we'll be able to figure out how to make ethanol from other forms, other materials, like grasses, woods. Now, think about that. All of a sudden, we may be in the energy business by being able to grow grass on the ranch - and have it harvested and converted into energy. And that's what's close to happening. We're told that if we continue to focus on research, we'll be able to, within six years, have a competitive fuel to gasoline," Bush said.

Bush also noted there are 4.5 million cars on the road today are flex-fuel automobiles that can use either gasoline or ethanol. "So the technology is there for the automobile and we're close to the technology of providing a competitive fuel to gasoline by converting that which we grow into fuel. It's coming. It's an exciting time. I can't wait to work with Congress to continue promoting this kind of research so that someday, we're no longer dependent on Middle Eastern oil," he said.

Hah, Dincha know conservatives want to pollute & poison & generally wreck havoc with the environment & the po folks lives?

gee gonz, it's not that they want to, they just don't care if they do.

but "they" aren't middle class guys like you. "they" just got you "conservatives" buying into their bullshhit, imagining yourself in the limo with "them." well, maybe, as the driver.

let me know the next time you flip the levers of power and pollute the poor.

They're working on converting the whole of the stalk into ethanol...not just the cob..oh, and didja know that more corn gets grown for animal feed than for human feed?

The corn growers are screwing over the people for the almighty dollar...no surprises here.

Look...something shiny in that field of corn!
