Is this a problem?

Two men who are members of Gideons International, the Christian organization that is famous for, among other ministries, placing Bibles in motels and giving them to children, have been arrested after trying to hand out Bibles on a public sidewalk in Florida, according to a law firm.

The arrest happened Jan. 19, when Mirto and Simpson were on the sidewalk outside of Key Largo School in Key Largo, Fla., and were distributing copies of the Bible to those interested.

"Neither man entered school grounds," the law firm said. "After the school's principal called police, a Monroe County sheriff's officer asked the men to leave immediately or face trespassing charges. As the men prepared to leave, the officer decided to arrest both individuals."

WND

Indicted or released. Doesn't matter. Arrested for doing Constitutionally protected things on public thoroughfares is a crime in & of itself.

If they had been handing out rubbers it would have been OK.

If they had been handing out copies of the Qoran it would have been applauded.

If they had been panhandling it would have been ignored.

If they had been handing out Clinton '08 buttons they would have been celebrated.

If they had been placing little Lite Brite pictures of some critter, they would be instant celebrities.

If.

They don't break the law, they don't get arrested.

Seems clear reading between the lines they were not on public property and that they asked for it, in their attitude and refusal to vacate the area when required to do so by the officers.

parking in a no parking zone and not moving off when requested to do so, is just asking for trouble.

what's your beef?

Read again dude. They were on public ground (sidewalk) and were in the process of obeying the officer's directive when he decided to arrest instead.

If the headteacher had anything about them they would not want any of the above outside the school gates -

frankly if the police move them all along from outside a school, fair enough - plenty of other public places for all the above and the Gideons - the headteacher has a job to do and a responsibility to ensure the pupils at his school are safe, and free from harrasment.

How does he know if they are good bible men, or pedos or wierdos?

If the police ask you to move on - move on!

Try looking at it this way. They were not on school grounds. The article admitted that. The handed out bibles to those who were interested. That was in the article as well. The school principal called the police...again, in the article. The men were asked to leave. When the men were complying with the police officer's request, they were arrested. End of story.

But, in this case, moving off as requested brought about the same result.

My beef is that the rights of those two men were violated. They were not breaking any laws, nor were they being belligerent towards the officer when complying with the officer's request. The principal of the school is at fault in all of this. Perhaps they thought this was occuring on school grounds. All in all, the principal should've been the one confronting the Gideons if they were on school property. The principal should've been the first to ask them to move on. The real crime in all of this? People have become more afraid of discussing religion than in accepting sexual deviancy.

Agreed. And not one syllable indicates they were doing anything more when some over zealous cop decides to get his name on Oprah.

Old joke:

Did you hear about Oprah getting arrested? They found 250 pounds of crack in her underwear. :D

Hah! You don't believe in dinosaurs yet you accept this story without question as is even though it comes from a source on the level of The Enquirer.

You have no reason to believe your "if's" either but you do.

Go ahead and try to find this story from a halfway reputable news source. If it exists at all I bet it's a much different story.

Funny how you attack WND but you've not disproven any stories yet.

Given the state of the standard media, you'd not find this. Hell, it's an effort to find a story about Pelosis plane dilemma in the mainstream media-yet it's 100% true.

I've shown several of them to be full of crap without hardly any effort at all.

Given the state of the standard media, you'd not find this.

You mean they don't make up and twist shit to get right wing christians "offended". If it's legitimate at all it would be somewhere. I even searched the local news sites.

Hell, it's an effort to find a story about Pelosis plane dilemma in the mainstream media-yet it's 100% true.

That sentence makes no sense. Want to try typing that again?

These were all front page earlier thurs ,have since moved off because of Anna, still a search for Pelosi (effortless) easily brought it up.

Even so searching Foxnews for Gideons International failed to turn up lead. except for an ruling in a different State http://www.foxnews.com/wires/2006Sep07/0,4670,BiblesForKidsLawsuit,00.html

Well, there may be some truth in the assertion -

it certainly wasn't picked up by the Epping forest Gazette...
