I've been using this system for several years now. I intended to build a new one this year but fixing up the homestead took preferences (stupid wife). So, instead of spending several hundreds to build new, I updated one major piece of hardware.

From an ATI 9800 Pro, which has served me well, I was looking at the nVidia 7800 GS OC. Tossing it around for a couple of weeks. Yes, no, yes, no, lots of money, do I need it, all the usual stuff. Then I found this beauty.

First thing it did was toast my 430w power supply. Went & got a 500w & HOLY SHIT!!!! There are all kinds of great things to see. Still at stock speeds, my 3D mark went from:
Score: 683 with the 9800
to
Score: 3702

Another year or so it'll be time to make the PCIe jump but until then, I can't wait to replay Far Cry & BF2.

End of this year is the expected timeline for my next upgrade. I use to plan for 3x better perfomance every time. I wonder if there is something on the market that can perform 3 times better than my XP 2600 and if it will cost me less than a kidney...

Next time I buy a laptop will be when:
- I'm rich or,
- This one stops working.
